Show Page Ten - The Springville Herald - January 22, 1?)H1 Understanding Navcjo to be taught in community school Understanding Navajo, a basic course in Navajo culture and language, will be taught beginning Wednesday, January 28, by the Springville Community School. Class members should meet in room C-16 Springville High School, at 7 p.m. Course objective is to increase understanding of the Navajo culture and language among foster parents and teachers of Navajo children in order to prevent frustration and misunderstanding. The idea for the class originated from questions and requests for help in understanding Navajo placement children in homes and schools. This course will meet two hours, weekly for eight weeks. Each class will consist of exposure to various aspects of Navajo culture as well as an introduction to some basic Navajo "survival" phrases. The culture discussions will include such topics as Navajo family structure, role of language in perception, per-ception, Navajo religion, legends, history, philosophy, medicine men, art, coping with modern life and values. These discussions will be highlighted with films, video-tapes and slides. The language portion will be centered around giving the students an appreciation of the Navajo language and its role in culture as well as providing them with some basic phrases of introduction, in-troduction, direction, foods, places, etc. A "Survival" type Navajo that would aid a reservation reser-vation traveler or aid in developing student raport. An optional text may be purchased for additional study. Insturctors will be Ollie and Aneta Whaley, both Navajos. Ollie is a Navajo instructor at BYU and a former missionary among the Navajos. He has also taught at the Missionary Training Center and is currently the Navajo culture coordinator there. Ollie's wife, Aneta, is a Navajo from Incription House, Arizona. Aneta was raised in a traditional Navajo home and participated par-ticipated in the LDS placement program for nine years. Class on herbs set Master Herbalist and Certified Iridologist, Lotus Bailey will teach a class in herbs and their uses on Wednesdays from 7-9 p.m. at the high school as part of this winter's Community Education Schedule. Materials taught will depend on student's previous knowledge of herbs. Knowledge of herbs will be helpful, but not necessary, to enroll in this class. Basically, the class will deal with historical and modern uses of herbs, fundamentals fun-damentals of iridology, demonstrations of tinctures, tinc-tures, formulas, ointments, oint-ments, and fundamental nutritional anatomy (what our body organs need nutritionally). Herbs covered will be confined to non-toxic, non-poisenous, non-habit forming herbs. Lotus Bailey is highly qualified to instruct this class. She is an anthropologist, an-thropologist, involved in ethnobotany, archeology, communications, and is herself an author. Free classes offered limited income families Nebo School District is offering free classes to families on limited incomes. in-comes. Individuals who want to learn to make ski jackets can attend classes in Springville or Spanish Fork. The Springville class will begin Tuesday, January 27 at 7 p.m. in the Springville High School, Room C-13. Wednesday, January 28 will be the beginning date of the ski jacket class in Spanish Fork. The class will meet at the high school, Room 4. from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. If you want time for sewing and a chance to learn more about basic sewing, join the sewing class held at Payson High School, Room C-13, beginning Thursday, January 29 at 3 p.m. All of these classes will meet eight weeks. Phone 489-8211 Evenings by appointment Unusual, new classes offered by community education The Winter Semester of Community Education classes begins next week, Jan. 26. Included in the line-up of classes is square dancing, which will continue on every Thursday at the Springville High School, Room B-2, from 7-10 p.m. Doug Hoffman, instructor, in-structor, is trained and certified as a caller and teacher. The class is geared for the beginner from 7-8:30, with the more advanced dancers from 8:30-10. This class has been a lot of fun for the married or unmarried. un-married. All are invited to attend. Call 489-8446 for any further questions. Tole painting and rosemalling are going to be offered this semester, Tole painting will be held on Tuesdays at 7 pm, and taught by Irene Jenkins. Terry Jenkins will teach the rosemalling class on Wednesday at 1 p.m. These classes will be held at 211 North Main (The old Oscar Boyer Home). A "Quick Method of Oil Painting" is offered for landscape art on Saturdays at 10 a.m. A painting can be completed com-pleted in one class period. Canvasses and sets can be purchased there. This class is held at 211 North Main also. Another new class added to the schedule is "Stained Glass Art," taught by Pat Jensen. This class will be held at the Springville High School in room C-14.
