Know where important papers are Veterans of military service are being reminded by the Salt Lake City Veterans Administrations Regional Office to safeguard their important documentsor face future delays in obtaining needed benefits. "That, is especially important the for the spouses of deceased veterans," said Elmer J. Smith, the office director. "Many times there is a considerable delay in getting benefits to surviving sur-viving spouses because they don't have all the documents needed to prove their eligibility." He said that the documents most important im-portant are separation papers from the military, marriage and birth certificates and divorce decrees. " "Those important papers should be kept in a bank safe deposit box or some other safe place. And the surviving spouse should know where they are kept so they can be obtained when needed," Smith said. A person shouldn't wait to file a claim if some important document is missing. "But it is much quicker and simpler," he stressed, " if the documents are presented when the claim is made."
