Francis Hazel probably knew more about what was happening in town than any other individual. He has now retired, and that early morning association w ill be missed by many. Francis Hazel came to Springville in 1933 and opened a cafe with his mother at 220 South Main, current location of Duke's Jewelry. In 1937 he moved across the street, purchasing pur-chasing a lunch counter j Francis' Cafe front as it appeared just before being sold recently. The north wall of the small store adjoining the cafe is the fire wall Francis built which - ultimately prevented further loss in the costly fire of April l!)7:i which destroyed - five businesses. f 1 if (FtM 11 mm r ITS- . - t SfciSki. r .''4- aMMaNM J - - - VI (A. ... ..... . As his business grew, Francis desired to build his own building. I laving chosen property on llio South Main, Francis made plans for the new building. Adjoining Ad-joining the property was Wood's Store which was was owned by Mrs.' Catherine Dougal Woods, who had a reputation for being a tough lady to deal with. Mrs. Hazel enjoys sharing this anecdote about their property agreement : "Alter some time, Catherine sent for us to come and see her. Alter small talk, she finally said, Mr. Hazel, I have decided, lor a fair price I will let you join on to my wall'." ' Francis just listened to her talk. Finally he said. 'Mrs. Wood, I appreciate ap-preciate what you have said, but I know your buildings are old and do not meet the fire code. I want to build a new building, so I will put in a lire wall. For a lair price, vou can connect to my wall'." "She said, "Young man 1 admire your spunk as a businessman, I think you will go far.' The wall, the cafe and the small store to the north was built. Mr. Hazel and Mrs. Woods became great friends. She always called him "Dearie" when she came in for her soup, tea and toast, much to the amusement of his other customers. Francis has been involved in-volved in Springville's interests from the first. He became a charter member of the Chamber of Commerce, Jaycees, and Lions Club and joined several others. I le often used his cafe to help when he saw a need. At the time when "drifters'" "drif-ters'" were often seen in town, many were fed there before being referred to the Red Cross for further help. The Elks Club often repaired toys in the basement to help out Santa. During the flood of 1952, dozens of sandwiches were prepared daily at the cafe which were delivered, along with coffee and hot chocolate, to those lighting the flood waters. On April 7, 1973. the fire wall proved its worth. A lire destroyed five businesses north of the Cafe (including Wood's Store) and was stopped from further progress only by that wall. Firemen fought the blaze from the roof of Francis' Cafe. Francis and his wife Dorothy are happy to have the many good memories of associations with their customers and workers through the years. They look forward to spending more time with their children, Rick Hazel, Los Angeles, California; Annette Johnson, Downey, California; and Kathy Butler. Spanish Fork, and with their four grandchildren. grand-children. Francis says he is also looking forward to attending more ball games. He lives in walking distance from Main Street, so Francis can be expected to be seen in the local businesses, still keeping up with what is going on in town. Teacher appreciation week set Teacher Appreciation Weel, January 26-30, has been designated by the Utah Congress of Parents and Teachers as a week in which parents, students, administrators pay tribute to Utah's school teachers.
