Fishing Season opens May 31 Depending on weather conditions this week, opening-day anglers at Strawberry Reservoir may find shoreline conditions " a bit damp," a spokesman for Strawberry Water Users Association (SWUA) said. Milton V. Theobald, SWUA secretary-manager, secretary-manager, reported the level of one of Utah's favorite fishing holes will be higher than it has been for several years. The reservoir is expected to climb to near its capacity of 280,000 acre feet of water before the spring runoff is completed this season. Garth Felix, Springville's second singles player lost to Jim Cowley of Highland in the semi-finals. Garth later took third in the state tournament. Jim Cowley went on to take first in state in his division. The doubles teams did very well at state. Both John Allan and Scott Wiscombe along with Mike Mendenhall and Wayne Larsen made it to the finals. Undefeated all year, John and Scott finally fell to Highland's Rich and Cowley. The second doubles final looked like the battle at Region as Provo's Frampton and Fillmore met Mike Mendenhall and Wayne Larsen for the state championship. The match was a little different, dif-ferent, but the results were the same. Mike and Wayne lost a hard fought match as it went the full number of sets. The eventual winner of the state title was Highland as they cap-tured cap-tured 4 out of 5 division wins. But Springville finished a strong second bed with Provo. Glenn Bird will be losing most of his varsity team next year, but he still is confident that they will not miss the state crown next year. Some snow remained on the ground near the reservoir the weekend before Saturday's opening of Utah's general fishing season, Mr. Theobald said. Access roads were muddy in some places, but all were passable. The association, which is resoonsible for sanitation in Strawberry Valley, will have checkers stationed at major entrances to the reservoir where use fees will be collected. The reservoir will be patrolled to make certain all boats have Strawberry permits. Fishermen who want to I v j ri Y ' fM4 ((' '"' -u -t: J Art City Gymnasts take trophies in local meets.
