Daily scripture reading brings the family together and sets them all working in the same direction. - I remember (Vtama Four Springville working women take a moment to share their memories. Marilyn Larsen Marilyn Larsen, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Farris Larsen, 160 S. 800 West, Mapleton, is a clerk at Happy Service. Her friendly out-going smile and willingness to be helpful set her apart from the crowd. One of 13 children, Marilyn is fifth from the oldest. She's a graduate of Springville High School who likes sports. She jogs and rides her bike to work. She enjoys Softball. She's devoted to her church and is saving money so she can go on a mission. When she says, "I remember Mama," the thoughts that come to her mind relate to a story she's heard about her infancy. "My mom would get up at 5:30 a.m.," she said, "to milk the cows. I would wake up too and cry. She would carry me out to the barn, lay me across her knees and reach over me to milk the cows. And, that is typical of her devotation to our family. She's always happy. She likes to sing and to do things for people. She's always baking for someone." Sue Ann Ewing Sue Ann Ewing has been a cosmetician at Allen's Drug for eight years. As she and Dad got older we often gave them money because it was more practical, but she really loved flowers. Once a week on my lunch break, I would go to my parents home and have lunch with them. We all enjoyed those times. And I am so glad now that I could spend that time with them talking and reminiscing." Cheryl Terry Cheryl Terry has worked at Christensen's about 25 months. Little did she realize as a young girl growing up in Springville what a "large family" would mean to her. "I always liked babies," she said, "but I wasn't one to fuss much about dolls. I liked outdoor out-door sports hiking, biking, playing ball and the like. And, I still do." Lila Brailsford, herself one of six children, met John Davies in Springville and married him, 31 years ago. He was one of a family of nine who had lived in Hun-stville Hun-stville and in Canada. They began their family: Kathy, 30, Provo; Sandra, 29, Payson; Lila, 28, and Ann 26, East Sandy; John 24, Spanish Fork; Joan 23, Lehi; Larry 21, Provo; Robert 20, Spanish Fork; Ellen, 18; Laurie, 16; Pat, 14; Bert, 13; LaDawn, 12; Marcie, 10; Jayne, 8, and Jim, 4. The family at home presently consists of the eight children still with their parents and 11 pure bred Arabian horses, one Thoroughbred, kittens, dogs, ducks, cows, and pigs. They live happily on a spread in Mapleton with a front view of the mountains and a view to the west that extends seemingly to the western horizon. Lila disclaims any secrets of child care, but her children all have her bubbly, effervescent personality, and both parents agree that there have been few trips to the woodshed with any of the children. "When they start to fuss, we just 100-S MSB-4 SALE $3.33 $59.88 remind them that if they have time and energy for mischief, it could well be applied to chores." "Really, we've had few problems," John Davies confirms. We've been able to enjoy each other and our family, we get on the horses and ride into the hills or we pile into the camper and head for a spontaneous vacation. Trips like these have included visits to Disneyland, Canada, and back-packing into the high Uintahs." "Our church means a lot to us," Lila added. Until recently she had four church jobs. One of which was minding the Relief Society Nursery which she did for eight years. This . involved tending fifteen little ones under three years of age. Her present assignment in the Mapleton Fourth LDS Ward is Mother Education Leader. "If I have any advice for mothers," she said, "it is to stay home with your little ones, if it is at all possible. They need you. Love them. They need that, too." She practices what she preaches, and her home welcomes not only her own, but their friends, and grandchildren who often return for a visit. Her youngest starts school next year, but Lila doesn't expect to have time for any 'empty-nest syndromes.' "There'll always be somebody around," she laughed. "The children leave, but they bring back their children to visit. To date, there are thirteen grandchildren." One of the reasons the Davies home is so popular is her fantastic reputation as a cook. She is famous Beryl Gabbitas and Cheryl Terry Remembering Mama is time-honored custom Approximately 52 percent of today's mothers work outside the home, and prognosticators think within the decade, there will be IV2 working mothers for every one today. The walls of the living room in the pleasant brick home reflect the family's interest in genealogy, with a picture of John Davies grand-parents grand-parents proudly displayed. Other walls are adorned with Lila's paintings, a hobby which she hopes to resume at that future day when there is more time. This week, evenings are spent in rehearsal for the upcoming up-coming Mapleton Stake Relief Society's production, "Because of Elizabeth." "It has been a good life," she said. "We have just about everything we could want. We have a garden and I can our own produce. In past years, we have had milk cows and I made our own butter. Our children who are old enough have all finished high school without problems, and those who were interested have gone on to college. They had to help themselves, them-selves, but it didn't seem to hurt them. Two of our children have completed missions Kathy served in England and Larry went to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. "Our children have all liked swimming, and at one time we had as many as nine on the team. This year five are with AAU. John Davies said, "It really hasn't been so hard. We set standards with the first ones, and they helped train the others. Actually standards stan-dards are set by the family with Mom and Dad of the traditional remembrance. Greeting cards have replaced the letter-more than 120 million greeting cards will be sent to underscore the Mother's Day holiday. And, Mother's Day is the second busiest day of the year for the telephone- only exceeded by Christmas. Fragrances are much in demand. John Davies now serves on the Stake High Council, but remembers back to the time when he was in the Bishopric for six years and he sat up on the stand and smiled down on his wife and their fourteen children sitting in the congregation. They read the scriptures scrip-tures as a family and hold family home evenings. They make it a rule to eat breakfast and dinner together. Lila handles the finances, and the family does well on the salary John makes from his job at Geneva. "The family has been healthy," he said. "We've had no big problems with doctor bills, though we've seen plenty of scraped knees." Asked if she'd do it again. She smiled thoughtfully, "Of course, which one would I give up!" If things get to be "too much" which she insists they rarely do, she goes for a quiet walk a.id comes back refreshed and ready for more fun that is part and parcel of having a big family surrounding you. Mother's Day Hon if came bo Anna Jarvis, in 1908, sought to honor her mother, Anna Reeves Jarvis, who had passed away two years before. She conducted a letter-writing letter-writing lobby that on April 26, 1910 led Governor William E. Glasscock of West Virginia to be the first to officialy proclaim a Mother's Day. In 1912, the movement received national support when Congress by joint resolution established the second Sunday in May as Mother's Day. (This is the anniversary of Mrs. Anna Reeves Jarvis' death.) President Wilson signed a proclamation that year establishing Mother's Day as a national holiday. It is said that Mrs. Jarvis resented the commercialization that she saw attached to her sentimental idea. Little did she realize at her death, the international ramifications her idea would have. In the United States, the second Sunday in May of each year honors motherhood. o NEW LDS BIBLES HARDBOUND CHURCH BOOKS GENEALOGY BINDERS MOTHER'S DAY CARDS PARTY SUPLIES SMALL GIFT ITEMS 489-7469 Marilyn Sue Ann Half-hour meals demonstrated A series of cooking demonstrations dealing with the theme "30-Minute "30-Minute Meals" is scheduled during May throughout Mountain Fuel Supply Company's service area in Utah and southwestern Wyoming.
