Bible translated well many ways By James Lang pastor Nebo Baptist Church Some people are confused con-fused about so many English translations of the Bible. Shouldn't we hold fast to the King James Version (KJV) and shun these young upstarts? ! "If it was good enough for our ancestors, it's good enough for us!" Let's take a closer look. It should be remembered remem-bered that the Bible was originally written in three languages: the Old Testament in Hebrew and Aramaic; the New Testament (NT) in Greek. The original text that is preserved for us today is extremely reliable. In order for the Bible to become popularized, it needed to be translated into the language(s) of the people. Thus ancient versions of the Bible arose in Syriac, Latin, Ethiopic, Old Slavonic, etc. soon after the Bible was complete. The KJV, completed in 1611 and authorized by James I of England, proved so acceptable that it remained for three centuries without a serious rival, the Bible of English-speaking Protestants. Pro-testants. The KJV set a standard of "Bible English" which has exercised a profound literary influence. Even today "thee," "thou," "cometh" are accepted as appropriate religious jargon. - Two reasons stand out as to why the number of English Bible translations tran-slations have blossomed in recent days. The first is new understanding in the area of the NT text which has led to minor adjustments ad-justments in the text. Secondly, the need was felt to render the Bible in modern English. The English language has undergone considerable con-siderable change in the past 370 years. Words such as "conversation," "meet" and "save" have either broadened or changed in their meaning. From the beginning of the twentieth century, a succession of translations has appeared. Two works - J.B. Phillips' "New Testament in Modern English and "The Living Bible" are paraphrases, and not strictly translations, as they attempt to capture the "thought" of the original writer in colloquial English without being bound to the original text. wmmmi Ifli The Nebo School District office building, 350 S. New officers are now being elected in each of the schools. PTA presidents should have their list of 1980-81 nominees ready for the meeting. It was voted at the last council meeting, Feb. 7, at the Westside School, to stay city-wide PTA rather than change to local school units. This would mean if a parent joins PTA at one school, he or she would also be a member in the other schools. Each council meeting, a newsletter from Utah Citizens for Decency' is given out. The committee is working toward improving im-proving the quality of TV programming and reducing the amount of sex and violence, especially during prime-time. prime-time. Chandler Nelson, son of Robert and Marlene Nelson, has earned all 15 Webelo activity badges and was presented with this award at the Fourteenth Four-teenth Ward scout banquet. More than two million Americans are alive today, cured of cancer. Greatest progress has been made against childhood cancers and those affecting young adults. Only slight progress has been made in treatment for the largely preventable cancers of the lung, colon, and rectum. What comes once every four years and is NOT the Presidential election or the Olympic Games? Leap Year, of course! Leap Year means that 150,000. Americans can legitimately celebrate their birthday, and that many women will propose marriage to their loved one. The origin of the term "Leap" Year is obscure. Two often cited explanations ex-planations are that Father Time "leaps" ahead every four years and that March 1 "leaps" from a Monday one year to a Wednesday the following year. A more scholarly explanation is that it comes from the Latin term saltus lunae meaning a leap of the moon. Leap Year is neceasary because each solar year exceeds the 365-day calendar by five hours, 48 . minutes and 46 seconds. Julius Caesar tried to set the problem right in 45 B.C. by fixing the mean length of the year at 365'4 days and decreeing that every fourth year should have 366 days, with the other years each having 365. This, however, made the year too long by 11 minutes and 14 seconds, amounting to an error of one full day every 128 years. In 1582, Pope Gregory XIII corrected the resulting 10-day error caused by the Julian calendar by simply directing that the day following October 5 that year would be October 15. The Gregorian calendar or new style calendar further provided that the extra day would be omitted on all centenary cen-tenary years not divisible by four. Therefore, 1900 was not a Leap Year but both 1980 and the year 2000 will be Leap Years 6 GALLON " WETDRY VACUUM mi Rugged wet and dry cleaning power for kitchen spills, stopped-up sinks, fireplace ashes flooded basements, sawdust and nails in the workshop.
