Show Bursitis pain can be avoided Sometimes it's "housemaids knee." Or "policeman's heel."1 By any other name it's still bursitis. It is one of mankind's more painful and disabling ailments. Bursitis, says the American Medical Association, means inflammation in-flammation of a lubricating sac about a joint. The sac, called a bursa, is similar to a collapsed balloon with some fluid inside. It is located at various places in the body where joints or tissues touch and rub. Without cushioning there would be friction. Bursitis can hit many points in the body, but most often occurs in the shoulder, elbow or knee. In almost every case bursitis follows unaccustomed unac-customed strain or overuse of a limb. By taking a little time to warm up to your physical condition, and especially by training the muscles that you plan to use in any repetitious motion outside your normal activity "(strengthening your wrist and arm before starting to paint the house, for instance) you can probably keep clear of this common and painful ailment. If you get bursitis, no one need suggest that you see a doctor. The pain is so acute that you will be the first to seek relief. There is much your doctor can do to relieve the pain and promote healing. One of the mainstays in treatment is a mild pain killer. Cortisone-type drugs have been used with some success. Heat treatments also have their place ir. bursitis therapy. In extreme ex-treme cases, surgery may be required. The basic treatment is complete rest in bed. Anything that will lessen the chance of the afflicted joint being moved will ease the pain and speed healing. Like bearings in mechanical things, your bursa stay troublefree much longer if you warm up slowly and let them get fully lubricated before you race the motor. Milton A new fireplace insert designed to convert conventional fireplaces into efficient home heaters and cookstoves is now available at a local store. The new product, which fits in to existing fireplaces and burns wood and coal more efficiently ef-ficiently by controlling the flow of air in the fire cavity, is on sale at Don's Heat and Save, Christensen's Department Depart-ment Store, 245 S. Main. The insert can maintain a fire through the night without refueling. A 60-watt 60-watt fan attachment increases heating efficiency ef-ficiency by providing forced air heat circulation cir-culation from the fireplace into the home. "Some months ago we mentioned to several of our dealers that we were thinking of building a fireplace insert," said Dave Halls, president of Halls Industries. "It wasn't long until we had received many tentative orders, so we started testing prototypes. They proved more efficient than aniticpated in reducing heating bills in the test homes to less than half the normal level."
