Show Page Two - The Springville Herald August 23, 1979 narna . 't- Members of the Springville Rotary Club are finishing up work on the Kelly's Grove project that collapsed July 23, injuring two men. The picnic area will be completed in two or three weeks. Shots available to fight infections Vaccines are now available against a variety of infectious diseases. Most youngsters are started on their preventive medicine route at around two months of age with immunizations im-munizations against four different childhood diseases. Diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis (Whooping cough), known as DPT is given in one dose combining com-bining all three at age two months up to the seventh birthday, says an immunization im-munization pamphlet from the American Medical Association. Usually three doses are administered, at age 2, 4 and 6 months, with fourth dose at 18 months. Booster doses are recommended for children at 4 to 6 years, with one DPT injection before entering school. Adults should have tetanus and diptheria boosters every 10 years. DPT. vaccine has been used since the early 1950s, and is highly effective. Diphtheria is still a threat to the unvaccinated, and can result in paralysis, heart failure or death. it makes cents By Vi Judge Dear Readers: While fixing up a house we bought, I reluctantly put out with the trash six rusty old screens with old rusty metal frames from the basement windows. New frames would cost a lot and we hadn't planned on that expense. But put those sad old things back on the windows! No way. A few minutes later, I spied a can of aluminum paint in the garage. An idea flashed. I ran and retrieved the screens just as the trash collector rounded the corner. Luckily I got there in time because, with their new coat of aluminum paint, those horrid old screens looked like new again. The mesh had pulled loose around the edges in several places and I couldn't get it back in the slot, so I simply overcast it to the frame with fine wire. It hardly shows. When painting screens with aluminum paint, have your brush almost dry so that paint won't clog the holes. Brush the entire surface in one direction, then reverse, and repeat on other side. It's so satisfying-and profitable-to give something old and ugly a new face. I wish I could do the same for my own. Dear Vi: I was wondering what I could broil two small pieces of meat on, so I tried the insert from my pressure cooker in a pie plate. Presto, a smaller broiler pan. Not nearly so much to wash up. I really enjoy your column. Thanks. Gae Wilcock, Fountain Green, Utah. Thank you, Gae. That's neat idea for a small family or a single person. Your idea Gae"reminds me of two blind sisters in Southern ' Utah who kept house together. One did all the cooking because the other, being deaf, couldn't hear the cooking noises. For cooking hamburger patties, she used individual foil pie plates in an electric fry pan. Another good idea for one, two or even three servings. Easy clean-up as well as an energy saver. And have you heard about the gadget that seals food, air tight, in a plastic bag, so strong you cook the food right in the bag, in a microwave oven or in boiling water? You can boil together as many bags as the pot will hold, another energy saver. A nutrition saver, too, as the vitamins and minerals stay in the bag instead of disappearing In the water. You can even cook puddings and pie fillings in the bag. Dear Vi: We got a swing set for our kiddies, but they kept sliding off the plastic seat. Rubber flower decals- the kind you use in bathtubs to prevent slipping-solved the problem beautifully, and I mean literally because they're attractive as well as useful. Rose Edmonds, Rexburg, Idaho Dear Vi: When my youngsters get bored on a hot summer day, a print shop on the patio table will keep them and their friends busy and happy for hours. I gather up some raw potatoes, a sponge cut into six or eight squares, food color, and a stack of white paper. (My husband brings paper from the office. The children don't mind the writing on one side.) I cut triangles, squares, circles, crosses, etc. on the cut side of halved potatoes and turn the kids loose. They need little supervision, once you get them started, so you're free to go about your work while they create their designs. Susan Cross, Cheyenne, Wyoming THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: You get enthused about a job; you're all for hopping to it. Then someone makes it just a task, by asking you to do it. The question that is puzzling doctors is: When should the tonsils be removed for the sake of your health? Tonsilitis is an infection of the tonsils that results in swelling and inflammation, in-flammation, pain and soreness, difficulty in breathing and swallowing, enlargement of the lymph glands, fever, rapid pulse and general illness. With modern antibiotics, in- PAYSON'S BEAUTIFUL HUISH THEATRE OPEN 8 START 8:15 ONE WEEK AUG. 22-28 I TUE. LADIES NITE fections now respond to treatment within a few days, says a pamphlet from the American Medical Association. Repeated infection can result in permanent damage to the tonsils. When this happens they no longer protect against infection, but become themselves a source of recurrent infections. At this point your doctor likely will recommend removal of the tonsils. Tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy (T&A) is among the safest surgical operations performed. Like all surgery, What are tonsils, anyway? The tonsils are however, it involves some risk. T&A will by no means guarantee against future colds and throat infections. spongy, glandualr tissues at the back of the throat and behind the nose. There are three sets of .tonsils: (1) the throai tonsils (2) the Unguals (3) the adenoids. The first two sets are usually called tonsils and the third set adenoids. Normally the throat tonsils are small and barely visible. They are on each side of the back wall of the throat, just behind and above the tongue. The Unguis are on either side of the tongue at its base. Both become enlarged on infection. The adenoids are above and behind the soft palate, where the nose and mouth come together. If infected the adenoids may become large enough to block the flow of air from nose to throat, forcing mouth breathing. Tonsils and adenoids provide a defense against infections that invade the body through the nose and mouth. (Continued from page 1 ) Halloween, but since much of it falls under the category of pranks, the police tend to be more lenient around that A short tour of town with a young teenage who refused to allow his name to be used revealed lots of unguarded and unlocked campers and trucks, already vandalized by groups of youth. Many contain expensive CB radios, appliances and other equipment. Such damage may never be reported, Yet careless handling of vehicles and buildings contributes to increasing vandalism throughout the area. "Anybody can do it," said the youth. "It's easy to vandalize around here." Public information programs have been done in the past in Springville to help prevent vandalism. However, there is wide disagreement on the effectiveness ef-fectiveness of such programs. Some Weep no more, lady, weep no more, Thy sorrow is in vain, For violets plucked, the sweetest showers Will ne'er make grow again. Thomas Percy people says they only draw attention to the crime and thereby encourage it. Vandalism is often looked upon by the person doing it as harmless. However, it may cause danger and suffering to other people. A fire truck called out on a false alarm set off by a vandal may be tied up when it it is needed in a real emergency, for example. In addition, the expense of vandalism to public buildings is passed on to taxpayers in often staggering amounts of money. A booklet on vandalism on file at the local police department urges individuals in-dividuals and businesses to prevent vandalism by teaching children not to do it when they are young, installing sophisticated crime surveillance equipment in buildings, reporting suspicious people in the neighborhood to police and contributing time to youth programs that provide teenagers with alternatives to vandalism.
