Show Page Six - The Springville Herald - February 1, 1979 f 1 i ought to know better by oneita sumsion When my husband ' . brought home a salary increase in-crease the first of the year, I thought, "Oh joy, now I can keep up with this demanding inflation and ever-increasing cost of living." It was getting so thatj every time I set foot inside in-side a grocery store, I'd hurry home and cook up another pot of beans... without the ham And every time the price of milk went up, I'd drink one less glass of it a day. Tho nthor riav when I told mv son. John, that I had bought him a new pair of pants, he questioned, "Brand new? Or garage sale r He's got my number. It's no secret that I'm the hst customer Deseret Industries ever had. Sometimes I'm tempted to be like the farmer who kept adding sawdust to his chicken feed, until iinany, he had his chickens on straight sawdust. Only trouble is thnuoh ovprv one of them uDDed and died on him. I kept adding tvp (textured vegetable protein) to the hamburger until even me aog turnea up nis nose ai it Well, those are only a few of the reasons I was glad to get the salary increase. Rut of course, the raise Dut us in a hiEher income bracket. So, first of all, Uncle takes his cut (both state and federal). Then, Jim felt so generous that he pledged pledg-ed a substantial increase in our church contributions. Then he decided that maybe we should add a little to the monthly mortgage payment so we can get ! 'Dastardly Dan' off our backs a little sooner. Anvwav hv the time Uncle eot through with US. nastardlv Dan eot his share, and Jim's eenerous nature took its toll, I had $187 less net pay than I had before he brought home the raise. So, it's back to the beans and bacon.. .without the bacon! it makes Jan. 22 Girl to Dennis and Wanda Carlson Olson, 330 W. 100 S., Springville. Cicero Emerson cents By Vi Judge j Dear Friends: I learned this neat trick for storing paper bags from our daughter, Eileen, who lives in San Diego. It's especially useful for large grocery bags: Fold the bag flat, according to the original creases, then fold the heavy bottom section up once more. This fold will reach to within four or five inches of the top. Now, fold aHJayers of the top of the bag down fold. Your bag is now as neat and secure as an envelope. Bags folded this way can be stacked like cards or set upright on a shelf or in a drawer. I've always folded mine flat, but Eileen's way is much neater and takes less room. Thanks, darling daughter, for another good idea. Paper bags are so useful, I hope none of you throw them away. A large grocery bag makes a dandy liner for the kitchen waste basket if you fold down the top about three inches so it 11 sit upngni ana stay open. When it's full, simply staple the top shut and give your neat package to the trash collector. Easy handling; no spilled trash, and you've saved a nickle by not using a purchashed trash bag. (Two grocery bags will hold about the same amount of trash as one 10 cent plastic bag.) Be your own trash compactor, too, by cutting both ends out of cans and flattening them with your foot. Also flatten cereal and other boxes, or stuff them full of smaller stuff. Large grocery bags are useful, too, for newspapers saved for recycling. Laid flat, newspapers fit just right in the bag and won't need to be tied. Actually this, or even tying them in bundles, seems easier to me than tossing them in the waste basket. (They fill a basket quickly so that it has to be emptied oftener.) It's really not that much bother to stack bundles of newspapers high in a corner of the garage until some newspaper drive comes along. Recycling newspapers is the patriotic thing to do, so let's do it. If you have a convenient recycling center in your area, you might even want to save a load for yourselves your-selves and pocket $15 or $20 for the effort. Dear Vi: Empty adhesive tape spools are handy in the sewing room. You can wind your tape measure, lengths of lace, rick rack, bias binding, etc., on them. Secure with a rubber band and replace the cover. Label the covers so you'll know what's inside without looking. This keeps everything neat and clean. LaKue Whitney, Tamna. Florida That's an idea I'm certainly going to use, LaRue. Here's another sewing idea from Rexburg, Idaho that I really like: Dear Vi: You know how time consuming threading yarn on a needle can be. Well, I make a threading end by dipping the end of the yarn in white glue and rolling it between my fingers. When dry, I thread a whole bunch of needles at once, and then I push all but one back beyond the point where I want to cut off my length of yarn. When more yarn is needed, I simply repeat this process, pushing all the needles but one back toward the skein. This saves a lot of time. Try it next time you tie a quilt or embroider with yarn. I also do this when mending or doing any hand sewing that requires many needlesful of thread the same color. Kathy Kendall, Rexburg, Idaho You don't know how happy I, personally, am for that idea, Kathy. Thanks a million. Dear Readers: Unless you have emergency heating equipment, you'll want to tape this idea near your furnace where it'll be handy should its blower unit fail some cold winter night. First: try to operate the blower on manual setting of the master control. If this doesn't work, mark the original positions of vanes in the ducts. Open ducts all the way. Remove filter to let air flow easily. Place fan in blower section to provide some draft, facing it toward the outlet. Be sure to close the furnace door against the flow of air from the fan. This will keep you warm temporarily until the blower is repaired or the controls are replaced. Afterwards, restore vanes to original positions and replace filter.
