Ours happened to be a little lit-tle more behind the times than most of the houses in town, and probably we were some of the last to give up that long, cold walk to the little weatherbeaten house with the crescent moon window. My brother was a career Navy man and married a New York City born and bred girl who had never seen an outdoor privy. The first time he brought her home, he took great delight when she inevitably asked the question, "Hey, Bill, where's the bathroom?" He took her carefully by the elbow and gently guided guid-ed her toward the window. Then, with a big grin and not uttering a sound, he pointed toward the outhouse as if he had been gleefully awaiting the opportunity. A couple of years ago we camped out (four of us in an eight-man tent) . I crawled into my daughter's sleeping sleep-ing bag (which she had used for winter camping in the Uintas) wearing my pajamas, as usual. A couple of hours later, I got up and put on my socks. Later, I added add-ed my slacks. The goose bumps got so high my skin felt like sandpaper. sand-paper. My teeth rattled so hard I thought my fillings would fall out. I got up and put on my coat. My teeth chattered so long and so loud that I thought sure the people in the next tent would yell, Shut up and go to sleep. Everybody knows what cold does to the human system. ..I was up and down all night.. .and not just to add those extra clothes. And all I had was a paper cup! Next morning, Jim rolls out all bright and shiney from his down-filled sleeping bag, eager for a sunrise breakfast. "Don't you just love camping out?" he said. "It's so... "Are you kidding?" I snapped back before his last words had scarcely frozen on his breath. "I grew up in a house with no heat, no bathroom, no sink, no.. .No, No, No. I hate camping out. It reminds me of home. I felt like I was always camping out!" 1 m , 'yj fe 1 fill hLj 1 .ST 3- Happy birthday to Natalie Kose Barker who will be one year old on January 27.
