Show Page Two - The Springville Herald - January 25, 1979 here entertainment ' there Utah Opera Company premiere opening to be Verdi's 'Otello' The Utah Opera Company will stage its first performance of the new year, Verdi's "Otello," in the newly restored Capitol Theatre. Featuring tenor Glade Peterson in the title role, the production will be given February 1, 3, 5 & 8, 1979. Donna Dalton, daughter-in-law to Mrs. Jessie Dalton of Springville, will sing the part of Desdemona in the Italian version of the Opera. General Director, Glade Peterson, has been saving this opera for the company's premiere production in its new home, and it happens to coincide with a year in which a resurgence of interest has occurred in Verdi's "Otello." Recently "Otello" was seen on the "Live from the Metropolitan Opera" television broadcast and was also performed by the San Francisco Opera Company this past season. Joining the Utah Opera Company in its performances per-formances will be the Utah Symphony with guest conductor, Juan Matteucci. Matteucci is musical director and conductor of the Symphony Sym-phony of Auckland in New Zealand. Staging this production will be Fred Adams, director of the Utah Shakespearean Festival. A faculty member at Southern Utah State College, Adams is considered con-sidered a Shakespearean authority. The opera will be presented in both English and Italian. Performances Per-formances in English will be given February 1 and 5, and in Italian on February 3 and 8. Utah Opera is interested in educating and building new audiences as well as satisfying opera devotees and thus feels productions in both languages will make the work accessible to a broader spectrum of listeners. Glade Peterson will sing the title role in both the English and Italian productions. He made operatic history in January of 1976 in Houston, Texas, when, due to the cancellation of a colleague also cast in the role, he sang three performances of "Otello" on three consecutive nights; a vocal feat perhaps unequalled in the annals of opera. In writing about these performances, Musical America referred to Glade as "an American tenor to be proud of." Appearing in the English version of "Otello" will be Kathleen Thompson as Desdemona ; Winthrop Buswell as Iago; Alan Edwards as Cassio; David Arnold as Rodrigo; Darlene Merrihew as Emila; Terry Sum- merhays as Montano; Warren Wood as Lodovico; and Guye Memmott as a herald. The Italian version will feature Donna Dalton as Desdemona; Gene Larsson as Iago; David Arnold as Cassio; Alan Edwards as Rodrigo; Laura Garff as Emila; William Goeglein as Montano; Warren Wood as Lodovico; and Guye Memmott as a herald. Tickets for "Otello" are now on sale at Daynes Music, 156 S. Main, 534-0842. 534-0842. Beginning January 15, tickets may be purchased pur-chased at the Capitol Theatre Box Office. The Opera Company's next production will be Bizet's "Carmen," to be performed May 16, 19, 21 and 24 in the Capitol Theatre. Next year Utah Opera will offer a season of three operas. Editor's note: Becky Boyer, new publicity chairman for the Springville Committee on Human Relations and Cultural Enrichment, Enrich-ment, will be writing a column reporting activities of the community and the committee. By Becky Boyer Springville's Committee Com-mittee on Human Relations and Cultural Enrichment met the first Tuesday of January to report on current developments and to set goals for the next two years. What would you like to see happen in Springville culturally or aesthetically? Suggestions from the committee ranged from compiling the oral histories and folklore of Springville to having a city-wide band or orchestra or-chestra with summer concerts in the park. A desire to see Springville clean up its streets and gutters was expressed. Helping the people of Springville to become aware of and participate in the many cultural activities and op portunities they already have was one of the goals There was a great need felt to make "Art City" more than just a Chamber of Commerce slogan. Is Springville truly a "city of the arts?" There was some doubt ex pressed as to the appropriateness ap-propriateness of that title, today. Historically, Springville has been a strong patron of the arts. Our cultural heritage is unique. There are still many fine programs here. Our opportunities are nearly endless. With enthusiastic and dedicated people like those serving on the Cultural Enrichment Committee we are sure to see progress toward becoming worthy of our name: Springville, the Art City. Defeat should never be a source of discouragement, but rather a fresh stimulus. South "Icouldhefp provide you with a regular monthly income if you became disabled?
