Reptiles are possibly the most maligned and misunderstood of all animals. Although these creatures, related to the glorious dinosaurs, are abundant in Utah, their bizarre appearance and unusual habits have given them a bad reputation. They are of little interest to most sportsmen, and reptile watching, unlike bird watching, does not have a particularly enthusiastic en-thusiastic following. But reptiles are not the slimy "demons" that some literature and opinion would have us believe. Most reptiles are harmless. They have adapted to some of Utah's most hostile environments en-vironments and fit nicely into nature's scheme, filling several spots in important food chains. Reptiles had their origins in the shallow seas and lush forests of the Paleozoic Era, about 300 million years ago. "It's a miracle that reptiles are around at all today." Says Jim Glenn, a researcher working with venomous snakes at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Salt Lake City. Glenn explains that reptiles have endured, severe climatic changes, enormous geologic upheavals, floods and volcanic eruptions and massive ice ages. Somehow, a few thousand species have survived. Native Utah reptiles include 31 snakes, 31 lizards and 1 tortoise. The Virgin River has a soft shell turtle, which has recently been introduced to the state. As with most areas of the country, misinformation, misin-formation, folklore and intrigue are associated with the rattlesnakes. Contrary to popular belief, bites from Utah's venomous snakes are rare. In fact, the annual average has been less than six since 1900, when accurate records were first kept. Only two human deaths have resulted from snakebite in Utah since that date. The Great Basin form is the most abundant and is distributed throughout the western half of the state. It is often confused with the larger western diamondback , which is not found in Utah. The other two western subspecies, sub-species, the midgut faded and the prairie rattlesnakes, rat-tlesnakes, inhabit eastern Utah's Colorado Basin region. Common across Utah, as well as throughout much of the west, are the gopher snakes, garter snakes, Mormon racers and striped whipsnakes. These harmless creatures, feared by some and misunderstood by most, are important checks on insect and rodent populations. Glen says that lizards, like snakes, are found in nearly all of Utah's habitats - from our hot deserts, to cool alpine forests. The sagebrush, collared and whip-tailed lizards are most common. One of Glenn's principal prin-cipal concerns is with the state's rarer reptiles. "The desert toroise's future in Utah is questionable," he says, "Its population has fallen from a known high of a few thousand to less than 700. And the status of the Gila monster is uncertain. un-certain. This animal has been overzealously killed and collected; but, like the rattlesnakes, it warrants far less concern than is generally attributed at-tributed to it. In fact, no Utah deaths from the bite of this "monster" have been recorded since 1900." Glen feels that the future of some of Utah's reptiles may hinge on the public's acceptance of them as interesting and important members of our fauna.
