One of the bridges built by Springville High School students is shown being tested. Sustained as the new bishopric of the Springville Fourth Ward, Springville Utah North Stake,: and pictured left to right, are Edwin R, Sorensen, first counselor; Charles W. Whitman, bishop; Jack I. Measom, second counselor. The retiring bishopric includes Howard M. Ivory, bishop; Bernell Hutchings, first counselor and Eugene M. Johnson, second counselor. The change was made in sacrament meeting, Sunday, February 19, 1978, by F. Calvin Packard, stake president Dale Williams, son of Mr. and Mrs. Stanley T. Williams Mapleton, was presented his Duty to God award in sacrament meeting last Sunday. Owen Quarnberg, bishop's counselor, made the presentation. Dale is 16 years old, an Eagle Scout, has held offices in his priesthood quorums. A sophomore at Springville High School, he is on the basketball team, played football, and is a member of the FFA Club. This is the statement heard many times each week in the refresher type and shorthand class held in Community Education. Many students are diligently learning and brushing up on typing skills. This class is for those of all degrees of skill: beginning, intermediate, in-termediate, and advanced. ad-vanced. Each week a new idea is presented, practice time is given, and timed writings are taken to see progress. Course content includes keyboard review to typing perfect production problems. The shorthand section provides a good review for those who are "brushing up." Tapes are provided for intermediates in-termediates who want speed and accuracy increases, in-creases, and typewriters are provided to produce shorthand notes in letter style. It is a challenge and it is fun! The latest data shows that of all the energy consumed in this country, appliances and air-conditioners air-conditioners consume about 3 percent. mm The annual bridge building contest sponsored spon-sored by the Brigham Young University Civil Engineering Department was conluded on February 14 at Springville High Scool. Shane Young, a sophomore, won first and third place honors and Gavin Washburn, a senior, took second place. The students have been working on their bridges since Christmas vacation and have spent considerable con-siderable time in designing and constructing con-structing the 29 gram ( 1 ounce) bridge. The basic design is standard in order that the bridge fit the dimensions of the five Ralph Hitchcock, in a special Ward conference con-ference Sunday, was sustained as second cousenlor in the 14th Ward bishopric. He replaces Rent Evans who has moved from the ward. The new counselor has been a teachers' quorum advisor, Sunday School teacher, elders' quorum president, bishop's counselor and most recently served on the stake high council. Shane's solid beam design netted first place Mark Roberts named most promising student Mark Roberts, a senior at Springville High, was recently awarded a prize of $50 by the Great Salt Lake Chapter of the American Institute of Industrial Engineers. He won the prize for being named the most promising potential engineering student in science and math at Springville High School. 'the award was presented at a banquet and lecture held at Hill Air Force Base near Twins enrolled at Middle left. Jennette Lee, Jodi Olsen, Larry Thatcher, l " j"1 with a load of 847 pounds and third place with 560 pounds. Gavin's second place was earned with a bridge withstanding 621 pounds of pressure. Prior to the banquet, Mark and two other students, Karen Peterson and David Bartholomew, participated par-ticipated as guests of the Industrial Engineers, in a tour of some of the new landing-gear facilities at the Air Force Base. Mark has shown keen interest in areas of math and science at the high school, performing well in physics, chemistry, college algebra and trig, and in computer science.
