Show Page Twelve The Springville Herald January 3, 1974 Harlem Globetrotters to perform in Salt Palace in SLC January 14 It was a crisp January day in 1927. Abe Saperstein, a portly little man with big basketball ideas, took five players, a basketball, and a smile, stuffed them all into a beat up old car, and started one of the most amazing careers in the history of sports! After 11,488 basketball games in 94 countries, the Harlem Globetrotters are still smiling, and so are the 70 millions people who have seen them play. The fantastic Harlem Globetrotters will be in th Salt Palace, Salt Lake City, on Monday, January 14 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are available at the Salt Palace box office and all ZCMI stores. The Globetrotters '74 will feature the hilarious antics of all the Trotter favorites, including Meadowlark Lemon (The Clown Prince of Basketball), famous dribbling great Freddy "Curly" Neal, dunk-shot specialist Jackie Jackson, former Bradley Ail-American Bobby Joe Mason, and 6 foot 10 inch Frank Stephens. As if the Golbetrotters themselves weren't enough, the half time show will feature Robert Ashley and Simon Heaps in a dazzling exhibition of table tennis, Vino Venita balancing razor sharp swords tip to tip, Dynamic DeMille, one of the world's greatest young tight wire stars, and Rudy Cardenas, generally considered to be the great juggler in the world. The Trotters' opposition for the Salt Palace game will be the Washington Generals, with famous Louis "Red" Klotz, two handed set shot artist and owner of the Generals. With 6'11" Steve Lawrence from the University of Dayton, Ohio, and a lineup of players averaging almost 6'4" tall, the Washington Generals are no pushover as an opponent. The Harlem Globetrotters will also be showing off their stuff at the Weber State College in Ogden on Tuesday night, January 15. Highway Department officials wish to acquire a total of 52.21 acres of Division owned land in five parcels between Scipio and North Hoden for a highway project. They would return "whatever land of equal value we can acquire" to the Division. Division Director John E. Phelps recommended the Board approve the trade with the stipulation that "we can come to an understanding un-derstanding with th the Highway Department that wildlife will have the protection it should receive on all highway projects." Board members agreed that past problems with highway projects resulting in irreparable loss to wildlife habitat have made it necessary that such an agreement be made. The Board determined that a proposed land trade in North Logan should be studies more fully by newer Board members before a decision can be made. Frank Gunnell, Logan resident, wishes to acquire land being used by the Division as an experimental ex-perimental area for big game, in exchange for land he owns east of Logan. Board's December meeting. Steve Gloss, project leader at the Southern Utah lake, and biologist Bruce May updated past studies and told of future plans for the popular fishery. Gloss explained the importance im-portance of the threadfin shad as forage for the lake's game fish. The shad was introduced into Lake Powell in 1968-69 to establish an adequate forage base for striped bass. It soon became the most important source of food for all game species, and became abundant throughout the reservoir. The black crappie and largemouth bass are presently the most important game species in the lake. Pressure on the species is heavy, with an average of between 120,000 and 130,000 angler days per year for the past two years, said Gloss. The striped bass have not yet been introduced into Lake Powell. May explained that water in Utah's hatcheries has been too cold to rear the stripers. A rearing pond for the bass has been built near Glen Canyon City where, it is hoped, the fish can be raised next spring. Water temperatures must between 60 and 70 degrees. "Because of the potential of the striped bass as a game fish, 18 states are trying to establish populations," said May. The first inland water where striped bass established reproducing populations was the Santee Reservoir in South Carolina in 1941. Since then three other waters have established bass populations all in southern states. Arizona's Lake Havasu may have reproducing striped bass, also. Work and God are the two greatest forces that ever have operated for the common good. Skilled craftsmen in the days of the old dedicated Guilds, owned something in their life experience ex-perience that is best described as a self-imposed discipline to the ideal of excellence. This wobbly old world is again getting ready to heed honest leadership that "makes sense," instead of striving so futiley to repeal the eternal verities. Millions now living are happy and successful because they do believe in work and God. Other millions are miserable and frustrated because they refuse to believe in either great force of work and worship. Last week's Bantam basketball showed four real fine junior varsity teams competing. Art City won over Stocker by a score of 37-26 In a well-played ball game. Tonight the varsity teams will play at the Utah National Guard Armory. In either case, the infant may have serious developmental develop-mental problems. JAN. 15 WEBER STATE COLLEGE Whitefish populations in the Weber River have increased rapidly the last several years, according to Jack R ens el, Northern Regional Supervisor for the Division of Wildlife Resources. "Before Flaming Gorge fishing became so popular, participation in angling for whitefish in the Weber was Bowling scores Won Lost 19 13 18 13V4 17 15 15V4 16 Springville Ladies Team: Art City Theatre's (Winners 2nd Qt.) With the decrease in pressure on the Weber, whitefish numbers have reached high levels. Rivers, just as land, have only so much carrying capacity. Whitefish compete directly with trout for space and possibly food. Reduction of their numbers through legal harvest is needed. For this reason, the season this year was extended. In light of the current gasoline shortage, Rensel pointed out that Utahn's who live in the metropolitan areas can serve fuel by visiting waters close to home. The lower Weber - from Echo Dam downstream - is the best area to visit, according to Rensel. Fisheries biologist Dexter Pitman reported anglers have been catching two whitefish per hour along that stretch. Nearly all anglers have been using stone fly larvae gathered in the Weber, said Rensel. One fisherman holds a window screen at a 45 degree angle on the water while another kicks rocks from the riverbed upstream from the sreeen. This loosens the larvae which float with the current into the screen. Fishing for whitefish is best with very small hooks, about No. 14, and one split shot sinker on the line, said Rensel. Whitefish anglers should allow' their line to drift from ripples into pool areas on the river, then watch for lines to stop moving because whitefish strikes are very light. Whitefish are excellent to eat. They are better when smoked that trout, because they have more oil, said Rensel.
