Johnson, oldest man, dies at 96; services conducted I I 4- .. ! iff V L'tn ovA. . ias ImhmJ Willis K.Johnson Former resident killed here in train accident Frank Herbert Gabbitas, 58, Provo and native of this city, was killed in an auto-train accident ac-cident Jan. 6, 1972 on Second South and Fourth West here. The victim was driving a pickup truck which had dual gas tanks and exploded on impact, according to Sgt. JD Dalton of the city police when it collided with the D & RGW freight train. Firemen extinguished the blaze within a few minutes, but the body was trapped in the truck and took an hour to extricate it, according to firemen who responded to the call. Funeral services were held Saturday in Provo with burial in the East Lawn Memorial Hills Cemetery, Provo, directed by Wheeler Mortuary. He was born June 1, 1913 in Springville, the son of Herbert and Mary Elizabeth Jones Gabbitas. He married Margaret Chappie on June 14, 1932, in Provo. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple. He was employed at the Geneva Works of U.S. Steel Co. He made his home in Springville until 1943, when he moved to . Provo. His hobbies were hunting, hun-ting, fishing, and camping. Surviving are his widow of Provo; two sons and two daughters. Rex and Joe Gabbitas, Gab-bitas, of Provo; Mrs. Albert (Patsy) Harmer, and Mrs. Gene (Peggy) Wiscombe, of Springville; his parents of Springville; a brother and three sisters, John (Jack Gabbitas, Mrs. Charles (Delia) Aiden, and Mrs. Lynn (Ruth) Miner, all of Orem; and Mrs. Lonnie (Myrtle) Howe of Salt Lake City; and 14 grandchildren. Orrol Huntington services held Monday in Provo Funeral services for Orrol R. Huntington, 78, who died Jan. 6, 1972 at the Utah Valley Hospital of a sudden illness, were held Monday in Provo. Burial was in the Springville Evergreen Cemetery. He was born Jan. 9, 1893 in Goshen, a son of Don C. and Lucia Huntington. He married Pauline Garlock Aug. 5, 1950 in San Francisco. Mr. Huntington received his education in Springville schools where he lived until 1946. He was a farmer and cattle raiser. He moved to San Francisco where he was a supervisor for the city Housing Authority until 1967 when he retired and returned to Springville for two years and then moved to Provo. He was a member of the LDS church. Survivors include his widow, Provo; three daughters and one son, Mrs. Brad E. (Florence) Ragan, Spruce Pine, N.C.: Mrs. Thomas (Helen) Cheney, Orange, Calif.; Mrs. Ralph (Donna) Verrall, Austin, Tex.; Fred Orrol Huntington, Provo; 32 grandchildren; 10 greatgrandchildren. great-grandchildren. Father of local resident dies Funeral services were held Tuesday in Spanish Fork for Margarito Marlin Avalos, 65, who died Jan. 7, 1972 in the Payson hospital. He was the father of Alice Graham of this city. He was born Oct. 17, 1906 in San Miguel, Mexico, a son of Yues and Martina Lopez Avalos. He married Hilma Elliott in 1958 and she died. I Springville's Mr. Senior Citizen, the genial Willis Kelsey Johnson who was the city's oldest resident, died January 8, 1972 in a Provo rest home at the age of 96 year. Funeral services were held Wednesday in the Third-Ninth Ward with Bishop Glenn B. Orton of the Ninth Ward officiating. of-ficiating. Burial was in the Springville Evergreen Cemetery directed by Wheeler Mortuary. Mr. Johnson, who was seen about town riding his bicycle until just a few years ago, was born June 30, 1875 in Springville, a son of Willis Kelsey and Sarah Mendenhall Johnson. He married Eva Clark on June 24, 1908 in the Salt Lake Temple. She died March 15, 1970. Active for his advanced years, Mr. Johnson kept his home and garden plot following the death of his wife and spent his time there and attending church. He attended the Brigham Young Academy and then taught school for a number of years. He later followed farming until his retirement. He was active in the LDS Church, having served in the Eastern States mission. He was bishop of the Springville Third LDS Ward for nine years and later served on the Springville Stake High Council. He worked in all of the church auxiliaries and in his later years was active in genealogy and temple work. Surviving are four sons and two daughters, Willis K. Johnson, Springville; Harold C. Johnson, Provo; Frank C. Johnson, Mapleton; Calvin C. Johnson, Burley, Ida.; Mrs. Grant (Ruth) Huff, Lake Shore, and Mrs. Glen (Rachel) Moulton, Heber City; 35 grandchildren, grand-children, 37 great grandchildren, grand-children, and two brothers, Richard M. and George L. Johnson, both of Springville. Services held for ex-resident Friday funeral services in Payson were held for Eliza Hilma "Beth" Hatfield Prov-stgaard, Prov-stgaard, 70, Payson, who died January 4, 1972 in the Payson City-Hospital of a stroke. Burial was in the Payson ". City Cemetery. She was born Sept. 25, 1901 in Springville, a daughter of Jacob and Laura R. McPhail Hatfield. She married James E. Provstgaard on Feb. 11, 1927 in Provo and their marriage was later solemnized in the Manti Temple. She received her education in Springville schools where she lived until her marriage. She is survived by one son and four daughters, 29 grandchildren; grand-children; 3 great-grandchildren; seven brothers and four sisters including Leonard, Kenneth, Raymond, Howard and Oran Hatfield and Mrs. Rhoda Simmons Sim-mons all of Mapleton; Arthur Hatfield, Arco, Idaho and Cloid Hatfield of Springville; Mrs. . Laura Brailsford, Mrs. Bertha Merryweather and Mrs. Celena James all of Provo. Aurora resident rites Friday; burial set here Word has been received here of the death of Ray Mason, 83, Aurora, who died Jan. 11, 1972 in a Gunnison hospital of pneumonia. He was the brother of Mrs. Ralph (Ruth) Anderson and the step-father of Robert Averett, both of this city, and Mrs. Bryce (LaRae) Anderson of Mapleton. He was born Sept. 30, 1888 in Aurora to Wm. Ezra and Sabrina Harward Mason. He married Jane Averett of Springville Dec. 14, 1908 with the marriage solemnized later in the Manti Temple. She died in 1945. He married Marva Averett of this city July 25, 1945 in the Manti Temple. He is survived by his widow, Aurora, and the following stepchildren: step-children: Robert Averett, Springville; Mrs. Bryce (LaRae) Anderson, Mapleton; Mrs. Gaylan (Noreen) Mason and Mrs. Bruce (Betty) Jensen, Salt Lake City; 18 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild; 2 sisters and one brother. Funeral services will be conducted in Aurora at 12 noon Friday with the burial to be in the Springville Evergreen Cemetery between 4 and 4:30 p.m. Jenny P. Avalos in 1969 in Springville who survives him as well as his daughter, two stepchildren; four grandchildren; grand-children; one brother and two sisters. Funeral services today for Roy Harrington Funeral services will be held this morning at 11 o'clock in the Wheeler Mortuary Chapel for D. Roy Harrington, 85, who died January 9, 1972 in a Provo rest home. Friends may call this morning at the Wheeler Mortuary prior to the services. Burial will be in the Springville Evergreen Cemetery. He was born Aug. 7, 1886, in Springville, a son of Jonathan C. and Marian Bastin Harrington. He married Ella Jane Simkins on Nov. 20, 1907 in Provo. Their marriage later was solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. Mrs. Harrington died in 1962. Mr. Harrington was employed by the D and RGW Railroad from 1918 to 1933, and later was employed by Springville City as a policeman and caretaker of the city parks. He was a former member of the Springville Volunteer Fire Department from 1912 to 1933, serving one term as fire chief. A member of the L.D.S. Church, he had served as president of the Elder's Quorum. His hobbies were hunting, fishing and gardening Surviving are a son and daughter, LeRoy C. LeRoy Harrington Mapleton man's brother dies Erving J. , Leavitt, 66, Bunkerville, Nevada, and brother of Porter Leavitt of Mapleton, was paid respects at funeral services Monday in the Bunkerville Ward. He died Jan. 6, 1972 at his home of a respiratory ailment. He was born Oct. 27, 1905 in Mesquite, Nev., to Jeremy and Martha Hughes Leavitt. He married Eldonna Abbott on July 16, 1935 in Pvovo. The marriage was later solemnized in the St. George Temple. Survivors include his widow, five sons and four daughters, grandchildren, four brothers and three sisters. Sister of local resident dies Funeral services for Hazel Blackett Barton, 77, former Springville resident and sister of Mrs. Donna Baker of this city, were held Friday in Beaver. Mrs. Barton died in a Beaver hospital Jan. 6, 1972. She was born Nov. 19, 1894 in Greenville, Beaver County, a daughter of John William and Agnes Edwards Ed-wards Blackett. She married Gerald Lowry on Aug. 22, 1916 in the Salt Lake Temple and they . were later divorced. She then married Jesse Horton Barton on June 27, 1923 in the St. George Temple and he died on June 12, 1932. She married S. Fletcher Barton on May 10, 1944 in Greenville. Survivors include her husband, Beaver; two sons and one daughter, 14 grandchildren, one great-grandchild, one brother and three sisters. Relative dies in Price Thursday Relatives were in Price Monday to attend the funeral services of Gertrude Roberts Powell, 78, sister of Samuel T. and McHilton Roberts of this city. Mrs. Powell died Jan. 6, 1972 at a Ferron rest home. She was born Jan. 3, 1894 in Joseph, Sevier County, a daughter of Thomas and Meatta Brown Roberts. She married Elmer Warren Powell on May 24, 1911 in Vernal and the marriage was later solemnized in the Manti Temple. He died in Feb. 1959. She is survived by three sons and two daughters, 16 grandchildren; grand-children; 27 greatgrandchildren; great-grandchildren; five brothers. She has been employed as a nurses aid in a Provo rest home for a number of years. She was a member of the LDS Church serving in the presidency of the Primary and YWMIA. She had also been a teacher in Sunday School and had worked in the Relief Society organization. Surviving are her husband of this city, 3 sons and 2 daughters: Mrs. James (Carla Rae) Hancock, Han-cock, San Diego, California; Mrs. Michael R. (Shriene) Stringer, Dennis LaDell Mortensen, Mor-tensen, Glendon LeRoy Mortensen, Mor-tensen, and Kevin Dean Mortensen Mor-tensen all of Springville; 4 grandchildren; 2 brothers and one sister: Griffith L. He was the brother of Mrs. Floy Turner of this city. He was born Aug. 22, 1889 in Sanford, Colo., to Bent Rolfson and Lorena Eugina Washburn Larsen. He married Mable Christiansen on Jan. 17, 1972 in the Salt Lake Temple and she died on May 7, 1966. Survivors include four daughters and three sons, 26 grandchildren, 13 greatgrandchildren, great-grandchildren, two sisters. A brother, B. F. Larsen of the BYU art department, preceded him in death. Owing to a loop or double bend in the Mississippi River, there is an area of about 10 square miles in the extreme southwestern corner of Kentucky that can be reached from the rest of the state only by passing through a part of Missouri or Tennessee.
