Open Letter ' Yriter sees nothing wrong with name of 'Red Devils' In response to the two editorials I've read lately regarding the name of the "Red Devils" for Springville students, I feel perhaps some people are "making a mountain from a grain of sand." If these people would just think back a few years when their own children were in high school as Red Devils or "Devil Supporters", I think they'd support the Devils just because they were Springville Red Devils. Then, too, if these parents supported their children or any, of the athletic teams in the past, wouldn't you be considered "Devil Supporters"? I graduated from Springville High School less than ten years ago where I was a Red Devil. At that time being a Red Devil was no more to me than being a Spanish Fork Don or a Provo Bulldog to students from those cities. Perhaps you as adults are feeling just a little guilty or reading in thoughts between the lines when you feel that being a "Devil Supporter" is more than cheering a basketball team or saying I'm from Springville. I think a Springville High Devil supporter" about which these High school senior is proud to be known as 'Red Devil' fan I'm a devil supporter!! Springville Red devils that is, and I'm proud to say it For the past two weeks, I've read the negative side on changing the nick-name of Springville's atheletic department depart-ment to something other than "Red Devils". And I feel that it is time you heard a view from the affirmative side. Ever since I can remember, I've always associated "Red Devils" with Springville High School, as do the surrounding towns in this area. And why not, for many years our high school has been doing a fantastic job under the name of the "Red Devils". Many a person has grown to love that name. There have . been attempts made in the past to change the name and these attempts have failed... because people like Springville Red Devils for a 'Red Devils' has evil connotation? Not so, says writer of letter I am a fairly recent graduate of Springville High School (graduating in 70) so my views concerning the Red Devil Mascot may be one sided and biased. In all the time I attended high school, never did it enter my mind that the mascot of Red Devils carried any religious or terrible connotatioa In fact until quite recently I never gave it a second thought I think the high school students today probably don't associate the Red Devils with anything but along the same lines as Cavemen, Vikings, Bulldogs and so forth. Smokey Says: roisurPfe i CAUSf riDf! Don't leave your fire unattended! adults are worried. As far as grade school "supporters" are concerned, didn't you always look up to the high school students and what they did no matter what their name happened hap-pened to be? Children always want to be older than they are. They just want some recognition, too. That's all. No personal offense intended, but don't you think "The Artists" Ar-tists" is a bit drab and lifeless for teenagers and ball teams? It would be quite appropriate for older groups here in the Art City, but not for high school students. They just are not drab and lifeless, are they? Then, too, if the students feel they need a new name, let them change it. Let these young people have their own say. It really has nothing to do with anyone in town other than those people between the ages of 15-18 anyway, does it? I'd like to close my comments by saying that I am proud to be able to say that I'm trom Springville, the Art City. But I feel equally as proud to say I'm a Springville Red Devil or a "Devil Supporter" (with no evil connotations implied). A Citizen name. It exemplifys the spirit and fire we have in our school and at our ballgames. In Mr, Johnson's letter, he expressed concern in seeing several youths wearing a "I am a Westside Devil" sweat shirts. The only thing I can see in wearing these shirts is that the youth in this town are very proud of their school name. So proud, that they had shirts printed on to express it. If there is something wrong with pride then I fail to recognize it As long as there is pride in "Springville Red Devils" then I see no reason to change the name. My mother, being a "Red Devil" booster herself, agrees. The next time you go to a ballgame, a play, or a concert", at our school, remember.. .you are a devil supporter too. Sincerely, Valerie Robbins a Senior a t the High School I take great pride in the beautiful art work citizens of our town have created and in our world famous museum. However, I can't think of a "sissier" name for a high school team than "Artie" or the Artists". Ar-tists". Artists are in studios and class room not on football fields or basketball courts. They have paintbrushes in their hands not footballs or basketballs. Having been quite involved with the team and its mascot I developed a great semtiment for the traditional 50 year old school theme. I hope very much that when I return for my five year reunion, I return to that same great high school spirit with our same mascot on the wall.
