Modern Garden Pest Brought From France As A Gourmet Food About 100 years ago, a Frenchman hungry for a delicacy deli-cacy of his native land set off a chain of events which now costs his weaker-stomached Pacific Coast neighbors several sever-al million dollars a year. The immigrant, who shall remain nameless to protect his descendents from the wrath of - their neighbors, imported and turned loose in the California vineyards a colony of creatures destined to become one of the worst garden pests the European Eur-opean brown snail. Tnis inch-long, dry-land mol-lusk mol-lusk today infests gardens at night, causing damage. Despite this, the Frenchman who started start-ed it all was motivated by pleasure. Like many of his countrymen, he liked to eat this kind of snail. According to the people who make Snarol, a leading snail killer, the brown snail, known as helix aspersa, is not the culinary delight gourmets call escargot. That is helix poma-tia, poma-tia, frequently bred and cultivated cul-tivated for its mild flavor and smooth texture. Helix aspersa is quite different. For some reason, its flesh is gritty with calcium deposits. Every well-watered lawn and garden has its share, ranging from dozens to hundreds depending de-pending on the effort made to control them. Tens of millions of pounds of snail bait are sold each year in the Pacific Coast states, where the problem is most severe. se-vere. Since snails have no known natural enemies, the best method of control found so far is Snarol poison, in pellets pel-lets and granules which are spread around lawns and shrubs.
