Show PAGE FOUR PROVO '(UTAHV DAILY HERALD, WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 15. 1941 SECTION TWO Georgia 'U'Uoted Out of Southern University Group BIRMINGHAM, Ala., Oct. 15 UP The University of Georgia's membership in the Southern University Uni-versity conference was revoked today to-day because Gov. Eugene Tal-madge Tal-madge had Dean Walter D. Cocking Cock-ing of its school of education fired for allegedly advocating' "racial equality." The conference, composed of 41 southern colleges and universities voted to drop the university of Georgia and denounced Cooking's dismissal as "both a contradiction of the ideal of education and a threat to democracy in America." Talmadge charged Cocking had proposed establishment of a school near the university campus at Athens, Ga., for white and negro students. Both denied' they had advocated racial equality. ATHENS, Ga., Oct. 14 (UP) When students of the University of Georgia learned last night that their school had been voted out of the Southern University conference, con-ference, 1,500 of them burned Gov. Forest Service Cuts Down Fires . The Uinta national forest is experiencing ex-periencing one of its most successful suc-cessful years from a standpoint of fire prevention, according to A. J. Wagstaff, assistant supervisor. super-visor. To date there have been but 10 fires on the forest, four man-caused man-caused and six caused from lightning. light-ning. The fires burned over four acres on the forest and 295 acres of land adjoining the forest. Last year there were 28 man-caused fires and 10 lightning fires. They burned over 163 acres inside the forest and 207 acres of adjoining private land. While showers have played an important part in keeping down the fire hazard this year, a great deal of credit is due to the public for its care in preventing fires, Mr. Wagstaff said. - He cautioned, however, that the forest fire season is not yet over warning deer hunters who go into jthe timberlands to exercise extreme ex-treme care in avoiding any fires. The Provo river CCC camp, the Soil Conservation CCC camp at ML Pleasant, and local fire -guards have been called to fight fires during the past season.
