SALT LAKE CITY, Dec. 11 (U.R) Sound reasoning saved the lives of . seven aparttnent-house tenants ten-ants here early Saturday morning morn-ing in a $7000 blaze. At 5:20 the lobby of the apartment apart-ment tuddenly became a "mass of flames," blocking the stairway to the aecond floor. The wife of a doctor, Mrs. George Wyatt, cmelled smoke and went to the door of her second floor flat io investigate. The door was hot, she didn't open it. Crawling out the window and leaping over to the next apartment apart-ment she warned tenants of the blaze.; Police arrested a 21-year-old transient and booked him in the city jail for investigation of arson. The suspect told an officer directing direct-ing traffic at the scene of the fire he heard another man running away from the 'fire mumbling to himself. Police werenot satisfied with his story. The fire was under control fifteen minutes after the alarm was turned in. All seven occupants of the second sec-ond floor waited in their night-clothes night-clothes on a balcony for ladders to be sef up. Calmly they climbed down. Assistant Fire Chief A. Ray Ward, in charge of fighting the blaze, praised the actions of the tenants. "They definitely owe their lives to cool thinking," he commented. The fire raged on three lides of jthe trapped tenants.
