Show 8 Sunday, March 28, 1943 SUNDAY HERALD Supreme Court Ban On Religious Instruction In Schools Debated , By RUTH GMEINER United Press Staff Correspondent WASHINGTON, March 26. OJ.R) ' First widespread" reaction of the nation's educators to the su-' su-' preme court ban on religious instruction in-struction in Champaign, III., public pub-lic schools is: "The case does not apply to us." ;' Two weeks after the decision was handed down only one state Michigan has ordered public schools, to end all cooperation In , religious education, of children. The Michigan ruling applies to classes on or off school grounds. Two other states, Illinois and Oregon, ordered a halt to relig-' relig-' 'ious classes conducted on" school premises. But in Chicago, 25,000 children still are being excused for weekly :church classes with the okay of ' city legal advisers. Oregon attorney attor-ney general George Neuner ruled that similar classes in his .state are uneffected by the high court decision. . Vermont's state education department de-partment asked local school , boards to suspend, religious classes in 'public school. But most communities com-munities defiantly are continuing the courses. 1 More than 37,500 children- at-: at-: tend elective Bible courser in 229 North Carolina public schools. Dr. . J. Henry Highsmith of the state , public instruction department said action will be left up to local school units., None have been suspended sus-pended thus far. At Santa Fe. N.M., lawyer Harry L. Bigbce filed suit to force New Mexico to abandon Us practice of employing nuns as teachers in the public schools. Nebraska's deputy state superintendent super-intendent of public instruction, F. B. Decker, suggested that schoo's eliminate recitation of the Lord'j Prayer at opening exercises. .But programs in 20 to 25 state schools for excusing children to attend church classes will continue. In the absence of official rul tinue through this' school year. Then next fall, many quietly will be abandoned' or may be forced to cease by legal actions to i e-quire e-quire communities to get in line with the Runreme court decision. " L I.. . . . A new court tussle is expectemipe anu-irusi iaw before the legality of the so-called so-called New York "released time-program time-program finally is settled. Children Chil-dren in some , places in 33 states are excused from school to attend classes at their churches under this plan. The Champaign decision; decis-ion; apparently" did not - clearly rule out this program. Most school authorities are reluctant to give up the classes without fur-, ther court tests. A United Press survey showed that action was left to local boards in California. Use of "free" time during fhool hours to attend nearby church-supported seminaries semin-aries continues in Utah. Wholesale Meat Prices Increase WASHINGTON, March 27 (U.R) Average wholesale meat prices jumped 8.3 per cent last week, the labor department said today. The department did not refer directly to the CIO packinghouse workers strike in connection with curtailed meat supplies. But it said "light supplies and active demand resulted in sharply increase in-crease prices for fresh pork. Prices for veal, .beef and lamb also increased as supplies failed to meet demand, the department said. ,tiM-i The department said the 8.3 per cent increase for all meat was the largest single week's increase since, mioM946, when price controls con-trols on meat were temporarily abandoned. It said the "sharp increase" .in whole sale meat prices was largely large-ly responsible for a 1.1 per cent increare in the overall wholesale ings, scattered school boards in price index,- which is composed some states are abandoning religious re-ligious programs on their own. In most parts of the-country, it was indicated classes will con- of some 900 basic commodities. On March 20, average wholesale whole-sale prices were 8.4 per cent higher high-er than, a year previous. Grocery Chain Prefers Fines To Long Trial : WASHINGTON, March 27 (UP.) All services serv-ices to the public in the disposal of surplus property through the Salt Lake office of the War Assets Administration will be continued despite the transfer of administrative adminis-trative functions to Denver, according ac-cording to John A. Slteen, region al director of WAA at Denver. Mr. Skeen is in Salt Lake to plan the integration of the Salt Lake office with a region consisting of Utah, Wyoming, Colorado arid New Mexico, effective April 1. Reorganization of the Salt Lake office is part of a nationwide contraction con-traction program permitted by the successful liquidation of large stocks of war surplus property and the resultant need for reduction reduc-tion in operating costs, Mr. Skeen said. Nationally, WAA. which had more than 58,000 employees and- 33 regional offices at the. peak 18 months ago, will be reduced to 10 regions with less than 18, COO employees. em-ployees. Personnel In the Salt' Lake office of-fice will be reduced from approximately approx-imately 575 to 196, including approximately ap-proximately 75 property and maintenance employees working on a temporary basis. Civil service commission regulations will govern gov-ern the Reduction in force, Mr. Skeen said. ".Despite this drastic reduction reduc-tion in force, which is being carried car-ried out in all WAA regions and in Washington,, there will be no curtailment whatever in the serv ice which the Salt Lake office renders to all persons, firms and agencies interested in the acquisi tion of surplus property," said Mr. Skeen. "Disposal of all property located in Utah will be made through the Salt Lake office, in cluding that at the naval supply depot in Clearfield, which has been handled, through Denver for the past 12 months. The Salt Lake office at 1710 South Redwood Road will continue the service of finding surplus property located In any part of the nation for in terested parties." Mr. Skeen stated that the ten remaining operating regions of WAA were selected chiefly be cause of geographical location throughout the country and that 1939 10 wheel International truck.
