Show 5 V V?" "100 Years Ago September 14, 1847. Before dark, Luke Johnson," William I A. Empey and Appleton Harmon came up from Laramie (to the ' companies going east ' from Salt Lake Valley) having, learned from an Indian , that there' were wagons hear. They say that a party of Sioux warriors have sot - the brethren's horses (lost some time before from one of the companies) com-panies) seventeen in number on the Raw Hide, about eighteen miles north. They say . it would take fifty armed men to get the horses back.. The Sioux are at war with the Crows and Pawnees. The report is that, a large party of Pawnees are a little down river from where the companies are. (Platte River). September 15, 1847 The company com-pany moved on a little after eight in the morning, crossed the Platte without difficulty, and decided o stop for the night about three o'clock in the afternoon, having travelled twenty-one and a quarter quar-ter miles over very sandy road. A small party of the brethren, unhappy un-happy at conditions with the main companies, decided to go ahead on their own, but 'they changed their minds when they found that the drivers of the ox teams were determined to keep up with them, even if they had to kill their ox teams to do it. As the loss of the teams would 'be blamed on the brethren who went ahead, these, last gave up going ahead r, to save the teams. September 17, 1847 This morning Thomas Brown, Ezra Beckstead, Mathew Welch, Benjamin Ben-jamin Roberts, David Perkins and William Bird started ahead to go on through to Winter Quarters, as they had no bread.
