Show "Fantasy Qiteen, Marionette Subjects From "the story-book atmosphere atmos-phere of Once Upon A - Time ' Land comes Mrs. W. S. Mahana, queen - of a ' make-believe . world, inhabited by marionettes, v - The Mahana house is an amaz ing place where anything can happen! There is a dusky pair from Harlem, who - strut across the carpet in the lively rhythm! of the cake-walk. There is a slinky Egyptian princess, whose lithe, body moves to suggest torn toms on the Nile, There is an ancient pharoah, who languishes on a golden throne, while a sleek Nubian slave cools him with;' a palm fan. A dainty little ice-skater, dressed dress-ed in fur, cuts capers on the front room floor, while a sultry hula dancer swings in the motion of the south seas. There are Eskimos and Dutch dancers and a lolly old Santa Glaus with a tummy that shakes when he laughs. ' All this happens Just because Mrs. Mahana went to see a puppet pup-pet show five years ago, in Santa Barbara. She went home all enthused en-thused about marionettes and after two months hard work she had completed her first doll, the Egyptian princess. Mrs. Mahana is the former Sylvia Syl-via Rasmussen, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. O. Rasmussen. of Richfield, Utah. Until last August she lived in San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara, California, where she received many citations during dur-ing the war, for presenting her marionette shows at military camps and hospitals. Mr. and Mrs. Mahana and two children, Betty Rae and Billy, are now living at 727 North 10th East, Provo. In Mahana-land, you may see, in the twinkling of an eye, a huge dragon crawling out from under the coffee table, with smoking nostrils and an angry red gleam in his eyes, and great white fangs snapping in a crimson mouth. Only Mrs. Mahana knows that the flashing eyes were fashioned by her own hands from stray bicycle reflectors, his Jiinged jaws from a block of redwood and his steaming steam-ing breath from talcum' powder blown through a rubber tube by obliging Mr. Mahana. With her dancing fingers manipulating man-ipulating the strings, Mrs. Mahana Ma-hana brings to life the fairyland characters of Hansel and Gretel, Red Riding Hood, and The Three Bears. Queen Mahana has 76 little wooden subjects. She has carved them all of .pine or redwood. Each little face reflects some of the charm and sparkling vivacity of its maker. Every contour lsj true to type and nationality. Mrs. Mahana, a former student of UAC. studied interpretive dancing, which enables her to make her little people move in rjerfect grace and rhythm. She has SDent many hours in art libraries studying imported pieces of art. in order to make her hand made costumes and properties authentic. In a western scene, a gay little velvet horse comes galloping out of a canyon. Betty Rae proudly explains, "The saddle was made from the sleeve of Daddy's leather fishing jacket." The tiny saddle has a hand tooled appearance, accomplished with a child's wood-burning wood-burning set. Artistic ability is displayed in the exquisite workmanship shown in the Tiands of the marionettes. The hands of the ballerina doll were fashioned after those of a famous dancer. The hands of the doll representing Joseph Smith's mother are so designed tnat wey can hold knitting needles. Destined to be of special interest in-terest to Utah audiences are the marionettes 'depicting Brigham Young, Joseph Smith and family and biblical characters.
