Show SUNDAY HERALD V&S&SSEE'ijW PAGE 7 More Powerful Type Atom Smashing Machine Reported NEW YORK, Sept. 21 (U. Construction of new type atom smashing machines, with even more powerful devices to cornel in the future, was reported today to-day at the annual meeting of the American Physical society. These new machines, designed to accelate 70,000,000 to 300,-000,000 300,-000,000 electronic volts, will be used in scientific research into the further possibilities of harnessing har-nessing power from the universe, particularly from the cosmic rays. The most powerful new machine, ma-chine, called the synchrotron, is beng constructed at Berkeley, Calif. This will accelerate 300,-000,000 300,-000,000 million electronic volts Another is about completed at the general electric plant in Schenectady. It will have a capacity ca-pacity of at least 70,000,000. Reports on both machine were made at today's meeting of the Physical Society. At the same time, there were discussions on the possibility of machines with 1,000,000,000 electronic elec-tronic volt acceleration. Scientists used the so-called cyclotron in early smashing of the atom, and now they need Strikebound Hotels, Cafes Seek Damages LOS ANGELES. Sept. 21 U.R Several Los Angeles and Hollywood Holly-wood hotels and restaurants, famed as tourist haunts, remained strikebound today while operators opera-tors sought damages for losses. A temporary injunction, granted grant-ed by Superior Judge Allen W. Ashbum to enforce an arbitration award, ordered picketing halted but striking culinary workers failed to return to their Jobs at major establishments. Hotel operators asked $50,000 damages for losses they claimed thev suffered during the first two days of the strike and $28,000 for each additional day it lasts. The union estimated that of 6,000 workers on strike, only 1.200, employed at 20 smaller restaurants and hotels whose owners signed at union terms, had returned to work. The strike was called when the hotel and restaurant employers ass'n. insisted that union employes, em-ployes, abide by an arbitration award. Thomas Fair Neblett. executive exe-cutive director of the association, asked intervention of AFL President Presi-dent William Green and Hugo Ernst, president of the hotel and restaurant employes international alliance and bartenders league. these new powerful machines to make further study of 'the atom nuclei. They cautiously say that the new machines may also produce artificially the equivalent of cosmic cos-mic rays. These are the beams that are found in great density 20 to 40 miles above the earth's surface and have a component, known as a mesop, which has thousands of times as much energy en-ergy as is released in the ordinary ordin-ary splitting of the uranium or Plutonium atom. The general electric engineers pointed out that the synchrotron being manufactured at their plant might be called a "portable" machine ma-chine in that it weighs "only" eight tons and is four and one half feet high. They compared this to the University Uni-versity of California's machine, now under construction at Berkeley, which has a magnet weighing 4,900 tons. They also compared it to GE s betraton, another an-other type of atom smasher, which produces x-rays powdered by 100,000.000 electronic volts. The betraton has a 130-ton magnet mag-net and stands nine feet high. Like a dangerous monster and it is that in more ways than one it is house in a special building with wall of great thickness.
