King: at the Kiwanis club meeting, Thursday, to combine counties as a means of reducing the staggering tax burden, is worthy of consideration and should be followed through at the next .session of the legislature. In Utah, as well' as in pther western states, the number ; of counties could be cut in half- and should be. bometimes, three counties could be telescoped into one. rsy aoing tnis, scores oj. sei j cAfrrcuoive wuiujf ahv- Somehow or other we rather envy en-vy that German doctor who took ials could be eliminated; upkeep of courthouses done away jhis Gift down to one of ti e .ja.ap- Sitting Atop the World With Jim Marshall with; business speeded up. When travel was hard, in early days, there was some excuse for small counties. Good roads, fast automobiles have removed that necessity. Any western state can get along with half a dozen counties instead! of the dozens they now have. Utah has pointed the way to other western states by leading out in the consolidation of school districts. The same arguments that prevailed at the time this progressive step was taken may be used again. California has 58 county governments ; Washington, 39 ; Oregon, 36; Utah, 29; Texas, 54; Idaho, 45 ; at least three times too many. Here is a constructive solution of part of the tax problem. prob-lem. It ought to be accomplished without loss of time, before be-fore growing tax-strikes as threatened recently in Del Norte county, California, spread to other states. It gi arantees the farmer a certain price for his t wheat based on a normal production and therr. it slips on a tax on flour and. instead of the gov- i ernment taking ihis flour tax money. It gives it to the farmers to pay any deficit met with on their wheat sales. , In this land or ragged individualism.- the dear, government never gives anything back to the people; peo-ple; all added taxes go down the ever-deepcnlns maw of officialdom. .JXTrc Despite everything - including the sale for taxes of as hich as a fourth the I m Droved farm lands.
