Then he was brought before Pontius Pon-tius Pilate, Roman governor of Judea, on a charge . that he sought to make himself king of the Jews. Knowing Jesus was Innocent, Pilate sought to save him by the ancient custom of pardoning a prisoner at Passover time. ,The mob demanded the release of Barabbas, a robber. Disclaiming all responsibility, Pilate sentenced sen-tenced Jesus to be crucified. So the procession started for Calvaryy Jesus-bearing the cross on which he was to die. Since the t eginning of recorded history, intolerance has been the course of civilization. It is a temperate tem-perate statement that a vast portion por-tion of the world's misery has been caused by it. Nor has this intolerance intoler-ance been entirely without those who have professed to follow the gentle teachings of the Carperter of Galilee. Intolerance inspired the cruelties of the Spanish inquisition. It incited in-cited the Massacre of St. Bartholomew's. Bartholo-mew's. It drove the Puritans from England: .and caused Doger Williams Wil-liams to travel into the wilderness to worship God in his own way. Intolerance has proven the great barter to civilization in the truest sense of the word. But just as intolerance in-tolerance has existed in religious disputations and international politics, poli-tics, so. it exists today in the individual. indi-vidual. Christ the trreat fullness of his wisdom, gave us the Golden Rule. It is the basis the epitome of true Christianity. Had this precept so simple and direct In its -wording but so hard to realize in the actualities of life had this precept but been followed the long-dreamed long-dreamed brotherhood of mankind would have become a reality long ago. But mankind, individually ana' collectively, is inherently selfish. We are altogether too hasty in passing judgment upon those, whose religious affiliations are of a complexion different from our own. Creeds and tenets too often blind us to the true Christianity. We grope in a mass of words and man-made theories and lose our-selveo our-selveo in a wilderness of disputation. disputa-tion. Intolerance is based upon sol--fishness. He . was a fine family man, and his two sons, Joseph and E. M. Holland, were close friends of Jepperson., They came to Jefferson Jef-ferson 'and asked him to arrange for their father's funeral. He took them to call upon the minister of the unnamed church. . 'I cannot conduct services for an actor," the minister said coldly, "but there is a little church around the corner where you might be accommodated." " "Then God bless the little church around the corner!" Jefferson replied. re-plied. Jefferson called upon the Rev. Dr. Edward C. Houghton and he conducted the Holland services. A lasting friendship grew toetweCnl these two men, and the church became be-came one patronized by all New York stage and musical people. Dr. George H. Houghton succeeded his father, and the association was cemented and made stronger. The little church is a low cruciform cruci-form building in Gothic style. It was opened in 1856. Among them are those to Edwin Ed-win Booth; Richard Mansfields; Harry Montague, a. famous player of his day; and to "Walter William Griffith, for thirty-five years postman post-man for 29th street."
