There, in the once sleepy village of Sandia on the edge of the Man-zjno Man-zjno mountain range, industrial engineers are translating the apstruce date of science into the fantastically violent weapons v4ith which this country intends tf hold its atomic lead over Soviet Russia. Even before President Truman announced on Sept. 23 that the explosion, operations at Sandia vfr booming. I They are moving even more urgently now, and" in any rejig-gering rejig-gering of atomic energy commission commis-sion plans and projects, Sandia will not be overlooked. l . It also is the place, where atomic science and technology come together With the military men who will employ them if war comes. I1 Hard by the AEC's bomb engineering en-gineering laboratory which report re-port says has gone underground ift the armed forces' "special wVapons" field base; together thy will spawn the atomic weapons weap-ons of the future guided missile warheads, atomic torpedoes, and whatever else may now exist only, as "a gleam in a scientist's 'Right now, however, the AEC's Sandia lab is concerned with atdmic weapons of the present, trie vastly improved bomb designs tested at Eniwetok and now. being be-ing manufactured on an industrial buis. a - Jit was Sandia's job to take thes designs, produced by the Lps, Alamos bomb science lab mne 70 miles away in the Sangre 64 Cristo foothills, and convert them into a serviceable field weapon. Havlriff nsiriprri the mani fold and complex components which go into the new weapons. Sandia then had to farm out their manufacture in industrial plants around the country. Refinements Made This it has done and is doing. It is not a static business, the design de-sign and manufacture of atomic bombs. Refinements are being made constantly. More efficient production methods continually .suggest themselves. . And the people at Los Alamos are always coming up with new ideas for the people at Sandia to convert from scientific possibility into engineering fact. Policemen Show Disappointment NEW ORLEANS, Oct. 7 (U.PJ Obviously disappointed policemen police-men reported today that they have been unable to locate' the shapely young woman who strolled nudr along Bourbon street Wednesday, her head and shoulders covered with soap and carrying a towel. Senate Olcehs Mining Bill WASHINGTON, Oct. 7 (U.R) The senate has approved and sent to the house a bill to stimulate exploration f6r and conservation of strategic and critical ores, metals and minerals. The bill would permit expenditure expen-diture of up to $80,000,000 annually. an-nually. It is designed to speed exploration ex-ploration for new domestic sources and to permit maintenance mainten-ance in a stand-by condition or in partial or total operation, mines which would otherwise have to be closed because they are unprofitable. I Chairman J o s e p h C. O'Ma-j O'Ma-j honey, D., Wyo., of the senate in-'terior in-'terior committee, principal author Matthews Fails To Close Hearing WASHINGTON, Ocl 7 (U.R) ficatlon. Secretary of Navy Francis P. Matthews made an unsuccessful attempt Thursday 4o keep the public out of congressional hearings hear-ings at which too admirals are scheduled to testify against uni-1 of the measure, told the senate yesterday it meets an, "essential need" as the "industrial and military mili-tary potential of any nation is in direct relation to its strength in minerals." Sen. Guy Cordon, R., Ore.; won acceptance of an i amendment which would require private operators who get funds from the government to repay such loans if they have an excess after taking tak-ing a "reasonable profit." The navy secretary made the request for secret hearings as the house armed services committee continued its inquiry into the re bellion of high naval officer against the way unification of the armed forces is working out. i Committee Chairman Carl'Vin son, D., Ga., flatly rejected Matthews' Mat-thews' proposal for a secret lid on the intra-service squabble. He said the hearings would continue to be public. Matthews, himself a supporter of unification, was the day's first witness. He asserted that navy morale is good and declared that officers who have "blemished" the service's tradition of loyalty will be brought to book. wjffif 111 HIS ilffifl : . iew . y v v r&i IE DAMAGES CLUB IN KETCHUM KETCHUM.
