The first game, against Emery on Dec. 2, was a slow starter for the Utes, leaving them down 14-2 14-2 at the end of the first quarter. According to Mansfield, neither team shot the ball well, leading to a low-scoring game. "I thought our kids did a better job of defending, and we did an excellent job of rebounding, rebound-ing, holding them to one-shot attempt every time down," said Mansfield. Down 4-6 late in the fourth quarter, the team rallied, forcing Canyon View into difficult shots and forcing some turnovers that helped the Utes take the lead. Bantam hockey continued Dec. 20 as Vernal hosted two games between Gunnison, Colo., andtheCraigCougars. Gunnsion took two wins, with scores of 1-0 and 3-0. On the morning of Dec. 21 Vernal faced the winning Gunnison Gun-nison team, losing twice, with final scores of 5-0 and 4-1. :1 a.. game, including the final six unanswered un-answered points of the game. "It was a great team effort as we had eight players score in the game," said Mansfield. Jordan Kenczka played a key role in the game, rebounding and contesting shots in the paint. Ian Drane and Austin McCauley were strong rebounders, and Kyle Hancock did a good job running the offense, according to Mansfield. Several teams from schools of all sizes attended the tournament-style event. The Utes played two 5A schools. First the team faced off against Cheyenne's 5A division Natrona High team, narrowly losing. Next the Utes took on Cheyenne's Chey-enne's Central High team. The Utes led through the third quarter quar-ter when Central pulled ahead for the win. Finally they face a team from Sheridan, Wyo., and ended the event with a win. The Uintah High School Drill Team finished first overall in the 3A division at the Bountiful Invitational against nine teams on Dec. 20. The U'ettes placed first in the Kick, Dance and Prop categories and second in Military and Hip Hop. "It was a good competition for us all around," said U'ettes head coach Robin McClellan. "We're really pleased with the improvement our team made from the Davis Competition and very happy with how we scored against some of the best in 3A." Team Captains and third year U'ettes Kadee Pitt and Andrea Rinderknecht took top honors in what coach McClellan called "a highly competitive drill-down competition," finishing in first and second place, respectively. Jessie Barton and Melanie Bustos came away with top-five finishes in the Lyrical Division during the solo competition the evening of Dec. 19, taking third and fourth place.
