Robberies, Robber-ies, identity theft, violent crime and property crimes are often committed by someone who is either high on drugs or looking for money to buy drugs. Law enforcement officials believe education is an important component of fightingthe war on crime and drugs, which is why Vernal City Police Officer Holly Dick spends time teaching Vernal Middle School students about the dangers of drugs and how to make good choices in not using drugs. Dick teaches the D.A.R.E. Program to sixth-grade students, emphasizing the role of personal choice and resisting peer and societal pressures. Nearly 200 students graduated gradu-ated recently from the D.A.R.E. Program, which is taught two times a year at the school. Graduates receive T-shirts and completion certificates. The local program is sponsored by private donations and taught by local officers. Dick says teaching the program pro-gram is "one of the really rewarding re-warding parts of police work" and believes education makes a difference, not only in the class- long On r t's fllmosr Christmas! Pending Senate approval, the presumptive nominee has been cast by the president-elect as a potential reformer. But, Uintah County officials familiar with Salazar's bipartisan brand of politics hope that he does not eliminate recent advances made by DOI. "I am cautiously optimistic that he will work with the energy industry and the Western states to continue exploration," says outgoing County Commissioner Dave Haslem. Similar sentiments are expressed ex-pressed .by incoming commissioner commis-sioner Mark Raymond, who says "Salazar is a known commodity in the West being from a neighboring neigh-boring state. It may make easier for us to work with him in the future." Obama said the DOI is "deeply troubled" and hopes Salazar will "very frankly, clean up its -s ft" 1 . ( VvJ ' t 1 win. Kennedi Barr. Wash-ington." Salazar, who sits on the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, has voiced opposition opposi-tion to the public-land policies of the Bush administration. As a sponsor of the Oil Shale Tar Sands Leasing Act, Salazar has questioned the commercial viability vi-ability of oil-shale production and the leasing of public land for that purpose. "If we are to succeed in developing oil-shale responsibly, which I support, we need to establish an orderly process for development that protects pro-tects Colorado's communities, protects our water, and helps us avoid the busts that have, in the past, set us back," Salazar said at his announcement. Apolitical moderate, Salazar's nomination brought guarded support from both sides of the aisle. The Salt Lake Tribune cites Rep. Jim Matheson, (D-Utah) and Sen. Bob Bennett, (R-Utah) as expressing modest support for Obama's nominee. Reaction from the industry has been supportive. Marc Smith, executive director of the Independent Inde-pendent Petroleum Association of Mountain States said Salazar "will provide a strong Western voice." An unnamed oil executive execu-tive from BP America praised the choice but cautioned "that the new administration must clarify its policies on renewable energy and opening new areas for oil and gas exploration." Under the Bush administration, administra-tion, the DOI has increased domestic energy production by lifting the moratorium on offshore drilling and accelerating accelerat-ing the timetable for onshore exploration and production. In addition to energy operations, op-erations, the DOI oversees operations for the National Park Service, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the Bureau of Indian Affairs, the Bureau of Land Management, the Office of Surface Mining, the Mineral Management Services, the U.S. Geological Survey and the Bureau Bu-reau of Reclamation. mbernardvernal.com V 1 Something to talk about. l Express 60 East 100 North -Vernal, Utah 84078 35-789-351' mw.mnal.com 435-789-3511 1 ' .
