Show Wednesday, July Obituaries Jack Holmes Jackie Wayne Holmes, 65, passed away June 17, 2008 at Ashley Regional Medical Center, suddenly from a heart attack surrounded by his family. He was born on Dec. 11, 1942, in "frogtown" Vernal to Cecil and Fern Holmes. He married his sweetheart Sue on July 20, 1963, in Vernal. Jack worked many jobs in the oilfield for most of his life. He was respected for his knowledge and willingness to help when called. He was also known for his teasing and joking personality. He was a loving and devoted husband, father and grandpa and took great pride in his grandchildren. He enjoyed spending time with his family, camping, hunting and riding his horses. He never met a person that he didn't stop and talk to or help if needed. He could fix or build just about anything and was always there for everyone whenever they needed something. He has left a huge hole in our hearts and we will miss him forever. He is preceded in death by father, Cecil Holmes; mother, Fern Holmes; and sister, Enid Lawson. He is survived by wife, Sue; daughters, Jana (Kreg) Augustus of Vernal; Janine (Mark) Boren of Vernal; and Jentry (Matt) Cranford of Rock Springs, Wyo.; grandchildren, Gray (Kari) Augustus, Au-gustus, Dalton Augustus, Jesse Slaugh, Ally Boren, Paige Holmes, Hol-mes, Brendan Cranford and Alex Cranford; brother Ken (Connie) Holmes of Vernal; sisters, Georgia Geor-gia (Harry) Bowles of Grand Junction, Colo.; Terry (Gary) Olson of Vernal; and Doylene Timothy of Vernal; brother-in-law, Roy Lawson of Vernal. We. appreciate the food brought to our home, the pallbearers and all others who assisted in any way during our bereavement. We shall always be grateful. The Dr. G.P. Massand has been serving up dinner for as long as he can remember. He enjoys experimenting with different spices and condiments and making his dishes original. He especially loves to create new seafood dishes. Since coming to Vernal, he has enjoyed spending his free time cooking and viewing the beautiful scenery. Dr. Massand came to Vernal in October from Massachusetts. "My son lives on the Wasatch front with his wife and our only grandchild, so moving closer to this area was important to my wife and me. And now, we have another grandchild coming in July, so we are very happy to be so close." Dr. Massand also likes working at Ashley Regional Medical Center. "The hospital is great, the people I work with are wonderful. I appreciate working with the other orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Burk Young. We have a great relationship and work well together." This was then followed by a Tribute poem entitled en-titled "Dad" written and given by Janine Boren. This was followed by a musical recording of Jack's favorite song titled "TUFF" by Ace Cannon. The benediction was then given by Taylor Calder and Chuck Barker offered the dedication. Pallbearers were Kreg Augustus, Augus-tus, Gray Augustus, Dalton Augustus, Mark Boren, Ken Holmes and Jim Allen. Honorary Honor-ary pallbearers were Brett Hendricks, Scott Slaugh, Jeff Slaugh, Shane Jackson, Chuck Barker, Taylor Calder, Brendan Cranford, Brandon Brackett, Chancy Olson, Kirk ( Harrisn, Cloyd Holmes and Scott Holmes. Interment was in the Rock Point Cemetery under the direction of the Thompson-Blackburn Thompson-Blackburn Vernal Mortuary. family of Ray Sadlier Quality care with a 789-3511 Vernal Vicky McCord Vicky Ann McCordr age 58, passed away June 15, 2008 from a long illness. She was born June 26, 1949 in Price to Thomas Charles and Gilda Smuin Hammond. Ham-mond. Vicky grew up in Jenson. After high school she moved to southern California where she did some modeling. After leaving southern California she moved to Grass Valley, Calif., and from there to Vernal. Vicky was an amazing lady with many talents. She loved nature and worked in a flower shop in Reno, Nev., which she enjoyed very much. For the rest of her life she loved her house plants and her yard. She was very much in touch with nature. She also loved poetry and many times would spend hours if not longer writing. Some of her work was published in "A Symphony of Verse," "Outstanding Poets of 1998" and four times in "Celebration "Celebra-tion of Poets." She was also and Wanlyn Aitken Wanlyn Cherry Aitken, age 83, passed away on June 29, 2008. She was born on Aug. 1 7, 1 924 in Menan, Idaho, to John Dee and Rachel Joyce Lott Cherry. She was the oldest of eight children. She spent most of her early years in the Menan-Roberts, Idaho, area graduating from Midway High School in 1942. The family then moved to Lima, Mont. She married Lawrence R (Larry) Aitken in Dillon, Mont, on May 14, 1943; He entered the U.S.Army lOdays later. The first three years of their marriage they only spent that first 10 days together. Hediedon July 2, 1982. Their early married years were spent moving around the oilfield in Montana, North and South Dakota, Wyoming and finally settling in Vernal in 1956. Wanlyn enjoyed gardening, hunting, fishing, camping, cooking, cook-ing, sewing, making teddy bears and spending time with her fam- iiy. Over the years she worked at the Early Education pre school, Standard Saddle Tree, Dry Fork Saddle, Sage Motel and Lamplighter Lamp-lighter motel. Her biggest challenges chal-lenges in life were the death of her and Lawrences son, Dean L Aitken onMay4, 1970inVietnam .and the loss of her eyesight due personal touch. Officials with the state Division of Wildlife Resources tranquilized the bear and relocated it. Black bear makes run through Vernal When a young black bear took a wrong turn last Tuesday morning and wandered into the streets of Vernal, he caused quite a stir. Clint Sampson, a conservation officer with the state Division of Wildlife Resources, said the bear led a parade of law enforcement officers and other interested bystanders on his tour through town. Sampson said the first call came in around 6 a.m. when the bear was south and west of U.S. I tighway 40. With Sampson and a posse of other law enforcement oHieers in towor cloaringthc way, the bear crossed the highway, traveling toward the Kids Canal. It eventually went past Ashley Kleinentary School and disap Ruth Lane Ruth Thomas Lane was born in Chalk, Texas, March 20, 1925. She passed away peacefully at the Uintah Care Center on June 24, 2008. While working as a nurse at a hospital in Amherst, Texas, Ruth met Sidney W Lane, who was a sailor in the U.S. Navy, at home on leave. They later married in Sudan, Texas, on Jan. 12, 1947. Ruth moved to this area, with her family, because of the oilfield work Sidney was involved in. She quickly became a fixture with the Baptist Church and her good friends. She was a compassionate and loving mother and wife, as well as a doting grandma. She loved the outdoors and would go camping or fishing with anyone that would take her. Ruthie will be greatly missed by all who knew her. She was preceded in death by loving husband of 51 years, Sidney Sid-ney W. Lane; daughters, Deborah R. Lane and Gretchen Lane; son, S.W. Lane; parents and all but one sibling. She is survived by son, Kent Justin Peterson On June 26, 2008 our loving Heavenly Father came to take Justin home when he died of heart failure. Justin R. Peterson was born July 13, 1977. He was the son of Chad Peterson and Carolyn (Krien) Searcy. Justin married Melissa Combs. The union was blessed with two daughters. The marriage later dissolved. Justin had many interests. As a boy he played football and basketball. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping and farming. He was an avid fan of NASCAR. Justin was a special spirit he loved children and they loved him. Justin had a unique sense of humor and was always making mak-ing the people he met laugh. He was a compassionate, caring and gentle soul. Justin's greatest joy was his daughters McKayle and Lissy. Justin was loved by many and will be missed by many. "We called a local bear hunter and his dogs sent the exhausted bear up a large cottonwood tree," Sampson said. "We were then able to dart the bear with a tranquilizer and load it into a bear trap for transport out of town."
