On the verge of a long weekend for high school sports By Casey tegTBOTi Express Writer Commitment is an oft used word in sports. It is applicable for obvious reasons to both the athletes and the coaching staff. However, consideration for what is truly meant by the word is rarely considered with much intensity. The scope of what an athlete has to be committed to is inspiring when one breaks it down and looks at each aspect. When we look into the eyes of a committed athlete we see what makes him or her succeed. Commitment begins with a commitment to self. Successful Success-ful athletes are committed to bettering themselves through maintaining values, morals and other self restraints. -They are committed to working hard and achieving their goals. They may have let-downs, but they never give up completely on them selves. This commitment is then applied to things like school. Where failure is a possibility, committed athletes make it a goal to have success. They recognize the importance of learning in the classroom and outside, and they make an effort to better themselves. In practice, the athlete then applies the same sort of commitment commit-ment to learning and improving their ability in their sport. This is the most obvious and thought of commitment when the word is used in sports. The athlete has to be committed to practicing and going beyond the normal season if they wish to improve. In today ' s world these athletes often have jobs they go to after practice. They work weekend and later shifts to allow for time to practice and get schoolwork done. Today's athlete juggles friends, school, jobs and their commitment to their sport. Life is busy and on the threshold of beingoverwhelming at times, but still these teenagers succeed. I'm not sure how they do it, or where they are able to find such a drive. I find it inspiring and confusing, at the same time. I wonder how they find the time in a 24-hour day to achieve. All I can say is they deserve a Christmas Break. Coaches are forced by law to give them a certain number of days off for the holidays, but I think coaches would be willing to allow their kids a break without the rule. They recognize the pressure-loaded burden the athletes and students are packing most of the time. After considering so many aspects as-pects of a teenager's commitment one can't help but wonder if they deserve a break when will their mother's get a break. No matter how committed an athlete is to a sport, one needs only look to his mother to find someone more committed to something. Enjoy the Christmas break and let your mom enjoy it as well.
