Basin Clinic 379 North 500 West 781-6634 Express Writer Alyssa Howell pointed to her cousin, Kevin Carter, and said, "He is my hero." At age 2, Alyssa may not understand exactly what a hero is, but she does know that Kevin pulled her out of the water that had closed over her head. "I was in the swimming pool, and was getting ready to get out when Iyelled 'Where is Alyssa?'" Kevin explained. "I hurried over to the ladder and climbed out. Then I ran over and jumped into the deep end of the hot tub because I saw her face down with her head bobbing. I pulled her out, picked her up at the waist and gave her to her dad." Kevin doesn't know what made him wonder where Alyssa was, but "something" told him to go to the hot tub - fast. The Carter and Howell families, both from Vernal, were staying in a motel in St. George, enjoying time together. Sandra Howell and Lisa Carter are sisters. Lisa had her three children, Kevin, Ashlee and Zack; their daddy, Tom Carter, had to work and couldn't be there. Alan and Sandra Howell had taken their daughter, Alyssa, with nephew and niece, Kevin and Ashlee Carter, to have fun in the pool area. They aH playe in the large pool. Keviri, at 7, is' already a swimmer, and Alan was playing with Alyssa in the water. He set her on the edge of the pool to wait for him while he went to the ladder, just seconds away. But Kevin was up the ladder and out of the pool ahead of him, headed to the hot tub. Alyssa had run to the hot tub and apparently jumped into the deep end. Alan reached the tub just as Kevin pulled his little girl up out of the water. Kevin handed her to him. Sandra had reached the tub by then, so she sat by the pool, comforting the frightened child. Sandra said, "We were all crying. cry-ing. It took us 12 years to have Alyssa, and it scared us to death. It is so amazing how Kevin knew to go to the hot tub. " "This happened on Friday night, July 27 around 9 o'clock at the motel in St. George," said Sandra. "Alan's mother, Joyce Howell, lives in Denver. About 9 o'clock, that same time, she suddenly got a sick feeling in her stomach that something was wrong with Alyssa. She stopped what she was doing and started praying. When I called her the next morning, I began 'Last night but she interrupted, asking what had happened to Alyssa." When Sandra told Joyce the story, Alan's mother said she knew there was some reason she had prayed all night. She said she believes her prayers made a difference. Joyce is 73, and Alyssa is her only grandchild. "Alyssa looks just like Joyce did when she was Alyssa's age. They are really kindred spirits, andAlyssa is so much like her, not just in looks but in many ways." "It doesn't matter what church you go to," commented Sandra. "If you believe in a higherDehir things Kke tltis happen: biT just get a feeling1, like Kevin did when he screamed 'Where is Alyssa,' and like Joyce felt. Accidents occur in split seconds of time. We are so thankful 'something' moved those two into the actions that saved Alyssa's life." Alyssa turned 2 on Aug. 8, and had an early birthday party which included Christine and Lee Stewart, her other grandparents, Stewarts recently moved to Vernal to be close to the four grandchildren of their two daughters, Sandra and Lisa. "Thankfully, we are all alive and well," said Sandra.
