Wednesday, June 20, 2007 Uintah Basin News Service Six Uintah Basin athletes are heading to the National Finals High School Rodeo in Illinois after participating partici-pating in the state finals June 6-9. Of the 29 competitors from the Basin who attended the state rodeo finals, the six qualifiers reached national? na-tional? by placing fourth or higher in their events. Three local teens also qualified for the Silver State Invitational Rodeo in Fallon, Nev., by placing fifth through 10th at the state rodeo. Altamont's Carson Miles is headed for nationals after earning second place in steer wrestling and being named reserve all-around cowboy. Miles also qualified for the SSIR in calf roping. Roosevelt's Rhen and Kaden Richard placed second in the team roping event to grab a nationals berth. Rhen Richard will also vie for a national title in tie-down calf roping after finishing fourth at state. Jensen's Richie Farnsworth took fourth place in bull riding, which earned him a trip to nationals, and Tabiona's Skya Defa is going to nationals thanks to her third place finish in breakaway roping. "It is really exciting to qualify and I am so excited to get to go," Defa said. "It is great when all your hard work pays off." Roosevelt's Chanae Shiner was crowned Utah High School Rodeo Queen, the first girl from the Uintah Basin to claim the honor. Shiner also placed second in the barrel racing and will compete at nationals for the third time. "There are a lot of kids competing for those top four spots so it is really an honor to get to go to nationals," Shiner said. "Nationals are so fun; you get to meet so many new people." ST' , J''y ? Neola's Rylee Mecham and Vernal's Mackenzie Boren did will at the state rodeo as well, qual ify ing for the Silver State Invitational. Mecham will compete in calf roping and Boren in pole bending. All six students will be representing represent-ing Utah at nationals in Springfield, 111., July 22-29, where over 1,500 contestants will be competing for a championship, over $200,000 in prizes, and $325,000 in college scholarships. The Utah team will also have a chance to participate is volleyball and basketball tournaments, a talent contest, rifle shooting, a knowledge bowl, and attend cowboy prom.
