Show A8 Wednesday, June 20, 2007 Vernal Express Flag Day observance The flag of our country has always been held dearly by Elks as well as other patriots. Eulogies to the flag have become part of the Elks' rituals as early as 1896. Beginning in 1908, the Elks were the first and only fraternal order in the United States to make an observance of the birth of our flag mandatory. Congress later set June 14 aside in 1916 as Flag Day in order that citizens may honor the symbol of American freedom, liberty and opportunity on its birthday. The Vernal Elks conducted a public observance commemorating commemorat-ing the birth and growth of the American Flag "recalling the achievements attained under its folds." "Our Flag is at once a history, a declaration and a prophecy," commented one participant. "It represents the American nation as it was at its birth and speaks for what it is today." The ritual was conducted by President Dyle Webster with Ken Kay relating the history of Old Glory and J. J. Kerlin reading the response, stating, "The greatest significance of this flag, however, lies in the influence it has in the hearts and minds of millions of people." The service concluded with the audience and officers reciting re-citing the Pledge of Allegiance. The announcement announce-ment was made by Terrell H. Sachman, ChFC, CLU, Managing Director of the Sterling Group. Board members serve a three-year term of office. Hyde holds the chartered financial consultant (ChFC) and certified life underwriter (CLU) professional designations. In addition, he recently earned a certificate in retirement planning plan-ning from the Wharton School of University of Pennsylvania for attending the AXAWharton retirement planning program. He is one of only 400 financial professionals nationwide to complete this program, and has also been awarded the title retirement planning specialist by AXA Advisors. Hyde joined the company as a financial professional pro-fessional in 1982. He is active in professional and community organizations including the local lo-cal chamber of commerce, as a member of the Million Dollar Round Table (MDRT) and as a member of the National Association Associa-tion of Insurance and Financial Advisors (NAIFA). He resides in Vernal. As a financial professional with AXA Advisors, Hyde works with clients to help them define their financial goals. He provides an array of financial protection and asset accumulation products and services including life insurance, insur-ance, annuities and investments as well as college, estate, retirement retire-ment and business planning. Despite Wednesday's afternoon af-ternoon heat last week, four paleontologists from the Utah Field House of Natural History State Park Museum were able to retrieve a fossil crocodile skull from BLM land south of Vernal. They extracted the fossil from a matrix of sand and stone, wrapping wrap-ping it in a "field jacket." The field jacket is a burlap and plaster protective cover that allows scientists sci-entists to remove and transport a specimen. Encased in rock of the lower Uintah Formation, the fossil skull is estimated to be 45 million years old. In the case of their newest fossil crocodile, the local nearby substrate contained evidence of fossil turtle shell. Finlayson carefully removed the field jacket, brusbingbackthe sand. She point to the skull pieces evident in the rock saying, "This particular specimen may have had a skull length of roughly two feet. That would make the entire animal about 15 feet long." The mystery will take some time to completely unravel, as it will take most of the summer to remove the crocodile skull from the rock. Meanwhile, there are a great many other fossils on display at the Utah Field House of Natural History State Park Museum, 496 E. Main Street, Vernal.
