Stteffflaong SC3i(5)Ilai?0 William Bo Harris By Kay Baker Mamta Chaudhari Emily Henderson Jared Jensen Brett Nielson Jennifer Daniel gnr Justin Evans Express Guest Writer On March 26, 2007, Uintah High School's Sterling Ster-ling Scholars were honored at a local banquet and program. The theme of the evening was that each Sterling Scholar is the captain of his or her own ship, masters of their fate. They were encouraged to hoist their anchors and sail the seas in search of life's great treasures. The decor of the evening reflected a pirate theme with treasure chests filled with jewels and silver. Kay Baker, UHS Sterling Scholar Chairman, indicated that the real treasures in life were not tangible, but rather those that build character and improve society. Each sterling scholar was directed to use a map and compass to guide his or her path by setting goals and having dreams, and never letting a rough sea encourage them to give up. Attendees also enjoyed a meal fit for a pirate prepared and hosted by Uintah High School's Sterling Scholar Committee. During the program, Judith Huber, representing the Uintah Schools Foundation, presented each Sterling Scholar with a $100 cash award from the Showalter Endowment. Steve Childs, representing Utah State University Uintah Basin, also presented each Sterling Scholar with a local scholarship. Bob Naylor, representing the Uintah Basin Applied Technology Center, presented scholarships to William Wil-liam Bo Harris in Business and Marketing, Jared Jensen in Computer Technology, and Kayla Batty in Trade and Technology. Appreciation was expressed to these three organizations organi-zations for their continued and generous support of the Sterling Scholar program. Baker had the privilege privi-lege of also awarding several cash scholarships, each funded by generous donations from the community. Five of the awards were Sterling Scholar Alumni Scholarships awarded to Emily Henderson, Ryan Sam, Jennifer Daniel, Brett Nielson, and Rachel Jolley. Rachel Jolley was also awarded the Strive to Excel Scholarship for showing extra dedication and excellence throughout her life. If you would like, donations to the Sterling Scholar program can be made at UHS or to the Uintah Schools Foundation. Contact Kay Baker at Uintah High School for more information. Ryan Sam enchanted the audience and culminated culmi-nated the evening with a piano solo, which itself was enough to rock the seas. He went on to impress the judges at the Northeast Utah Region Sterling Scholar Competition that was held at the new Roosevelt Roos-evelt Junior High School on April 17, 2007, where he was named a winner in the Music category. William Bo Harris also impressed his judges and was named a winner in the Business and Marketing category.
