It is the season to get out and watch ducks and geese with binoculars, binocu-lars, spotting scopes and perhaps per-haps a camera with a good tele-photo tele-photo lens. March and April are among the best months to see ducks, geese, swans and other waterfowl as they migrate through or return to Utah. "March and April are great months for viewing the water-, fowl migrations," said Tom Aldrich, Waterfowl Coordinator for the Utah Division of Wildlife . Resources. "Last year we recorded 118,594 ducks, 2,088 Canada geese and 16,842 swans just on the State Waterfowl Management -Areas' during"1 TERN PARK CALENDAR Mmmv 53 swatte West Highway 40 a mi Vernal, Utah 84078 435-789-0103 Hours Lunch Monday - Friday 1 1:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. Dinner Tuesday. - Friday 5:00 - 9:00 p.m. Saturday 1 1 :00 a,m. - 9:00 p.m. Wc ire bam) W of Wil-Man. f; Marissa McKeachnie from the outside out-side was always a pleasant sight for the Ute team. "During the spring, waterfowl water-fowl are at their most colorful as they are in their breeding plumage. plum-age. Breeding efforts also bring out some fascinating behaviors as the birds try to attract mates. These displays can be fun to watch." Aldrich said the geese and swans are usually the first to start moving through Utah. Duck numbers vary depending depend-ing on the species. Shovelers and Goldeneyes are some of the first ducks to migrate through reaching their high numbers in February. April migrants include Cinnamon teal, Ruddy and the majority of the mergansei. "State and federal wildlife or waterfowl management areas and refuges are good places to go to see the migrations," said Aldrich. "These areas were mostly chosen because they were preferred places for the birds to stop and feed on their migrations. Some areas are also preferred breeding locations. Often there is local information available avail-able such as brochures or interpretive inter-pretive signing to help viewers locate and identify the birds that can be seen there." "While the best places to view these birds will likely be the State and Federal Waterfowl management areas and refuges, there are also other areas on public or private lands which should hold plenty of birds," Aldrich said. "Just look for a body of water such as a lake, pond or stream near open fields. Finding a place close to home makes it easy to get out for a short while in the morning or evening to see birds or make a day of it and go to one of the waterfowl refuges." "Remember, these are wild birds and won't tolerate humans getting too close," Aldrich said. "Cars make a good blind as the birds get used to seeing them and will usually let a car get much closer than someone on foot. Also, don't forget to take a pair of binoculars or a spotting scope so you can view them at a distance. If you don't approach them too closely, the birds will ignore you and continue doing whatever it was they were doing. If you try to approach, they will move away and may leave the area completely. To get good photographs you will need to use a long telephoto lens. A good bird identification identifica-tion guide can also enhance the experience.'3, ' Central Utah Cow (Curing Brown Wedding 14 KVEL Home & Garden Show EUHEA Convention 21 BLM Wild Horse Adoption Sportsmen for Wildlife Christian Academy Auction Rising Star Horse Show 128 Romaine Thomson Parker Horse Sale Current Topics Rummage Sale 789 - 7399 ,h,iHW: 333 West Main Vernal, Utah 789-3818 |
