Uintah High softball splits two away games The Uintah Utes softball team played two games over the past week. The first game was Friday against Tooele and the second was against Kearns. Uintah lost the Tooele game 4-1 and defeated Kearns 5-0. Uintah faced a tough challenge chal-lenge against Tooele, who have been the State Champions three of the last four years. They also faced what Head Coach Claye Robb described recently as the best pitcher to come out of Utah in a long time. Robb explained, "We played a strong defense but only had two hits during the game." The score ended 4-1 but Uintah kept it close with a score of 2-1 until the seventh inning when Tooele scored two more runs. Robb continued, contin-ued, "Kaylee Poglajen got on base three times because of her quickness from the left side of the plate and the umpire called her out each time because she stepped over the batters box as she was performing a running slap. If she could have been on base each time the score would have been different. We competed com-peted and we're proud of our athletes, but with the talent we have we expect them to hit the ball better even with that caliber cali-ber of pitcher." Robb said that his team eagerly awaits a rematch against Tooele. Robb adds, "It is just still the preseason and i r ; . 1 1 I i'i,w.i.ti4'! Saturday took Uintah to a game against the Kearns' Cougars, who are a tough 5A school. Kelsi Robb stepped up to the challenge, pitching a shutout against Tooele. Robb added, "we have never beat Tooele, but have played them the last four years in the pre season. Again Uintah's defense was very strong, Robb commented, "Both the Tooele Coach and the Kearns Coach mentioned the skill level of Kaylee Poglajen our third baseman. You have to be very confident if you play third base and Kaylee is and she has very quick hands and feet." Madisen Robb hit a double dou-ble in the game. Robb continued, "When you have a tight game like this one it is important to have a strong catcher that won't let any balls go through to let the other team advance to the next base, and senior catcher, Kati Labrum, had a great game, not allowing anything to go by her." He continued on to say that Marinda Gilroy and Marrisa McKeachnie contrib-, uted offensively and defensive- ly. - ' The Utes will travel to St. j George to compete in a tourna- j ment this weekend. The Uintah Utes soccer team played three games to end their preseason week. Their first game was against Snow Canyon, and Head Coach Jared McKeachnie commented, "...we went to St. George and we had record-breaking heat." The temperature hovered around 85 degrees. McKeachnie added that although the team lost the game 2-1, "Considering the temperature we played well." Their second game came against Hurricane and Uintah walked away with a win, 4-1. Their final game of the week ended comfortably with zero on the other side of the scoreboard score-board 4-0. Although Uintah lost to Snow Canyon, McKeachnie said, "We controlled the ball most of the game on Snow Canyon's end of the field and had 11 more shots on goal than Snow Canyon." The only goal was scored by Derek Cushing, with an assist by Cameron Millecam. The Hurricane game was not a flawless one for Uintah and McKeachnie thought his team struggled with consecutive consecu-tive passing amongst the team. Landon Larsen also received a red card and so Uintah played much of the second half a man down. McKeachnie concluded, "We played well enough to win the game." Despite the negative factors fac-tors of the Hurricane game McKeachnie explained, "The team unity is getting stronger and stronger each game we play. We don't have any super stars; we have 12 to 15 strong, dedicated guys that have a great attitude and are giving everything they have to help the team." Scoring goals were Millecam and Cushing, who each scored one, Derek Bunderson led with 2 points. The assists came by Drew Pierce, Kevin Hacking, Bunderson, and Larsen, all with one. The Canyon View game made up for the sloppy play of the earlier games. McKeachnie said, "I was extremely happy with the team during this game." McKeachnie went on to say, "Kyler Monsen, a junior, stood out in this gayie with great control and hard work that helped the team maintain the ball on Canyon View's half of the field. Landon Larsen had to sit out this game but would have had a heyday against this team." Scoring one goal each were Pierce and Cushing. Bunderson recorded 2. Assists were completed by Millecam with 2, Harris 1, and Larsen 1. McKeachnie said, "Bo Harris, a senior, had only 1 assist but was the player that left it all on the field. He was key in helping help-ing with the goose egg Canyon View had and also started many runs that ended in scoring scor-ing opportunities." Kevin Hacking recorded the shutout and McKeachnie continued, con-tinued, "Austin White, Kevin Henderson, Daniel Gurr, and Pete Cook played great defense that made Kevin's life as a goalie much easier." , ; , Uintah begins region play with games against Wasatch away and Judge Memorial also away. McKeachnie stated, "We are excited to play them. I believe we have the confidence and mental toughness to beat these two teams.". ' |
