This sounds exactly like what I've been looking for - is this something I can do myself? Harriet 0. Dear Harriet, Your friend might have been referring to a recent Today Show appearance we did over the holiday season where we made a custom upholstered headboard. Considering the huge amount of feedback we received, we could tell this is a popular project! We actually feature this project in our new book BE JANE'S GUIDE TO HOME EMPOWERMENT and it's definitely defi-nitely something you can do, too! You can start with either a headboard you currently own, or go to any local thrift store and find one to upholster that fits your bed and your style. Or you can build your own headboard head-board from scratch with a bit of plywood, a jigsaw and a little creativity. However, before you get started, you'll need to know a few things first: Know the width of your bed because the headboard should be slightly wider than your mattress. You also want to predetermine pre-determine the height of your headboard. Think of how you'll most likely use it. If you like to read or watch TV in bed make sure you make it tall enough so you can comfortably lean against it without your head hitting the wall!
