Talking with our Teachers By Janine Shannon Express Writer It took volunteering at her church's week-long Bible camp for Ashley Scott to realize that she loved working with children. chil-dren. Lee Gagon, who now works at the district office, noticed no-ticed her talents and told Scott that she should student teach with her. Scott applied for the program right away. Now in her fourth year teaching first grade at Todd Elementary El-ementary School, Scott said she would not change a thing, not careers, grades, or schools. "I absolutely love first grade," she said. "And I wouldn't trade schools for anything." Scott said she feels very strongly toward Todd's students and staff, who are "the most supportive sup-portive people anybody could ever work with." "I appreciate all of them," she said. Her favorite subject to teach is writing. Even though first graders are just learning to read, they "invent" spell by ; sounding out the word and then writing how it sounds. In learning learn-ing to write, students work together to-gether as a class and then write on their own. By the end of the " year, some students are writing 'two to three-page stories. Scott ;sees a lot of changes in her stu- dents throughout the year. ; "It's fun to watch them grow ! up before your eyes," she said. ! Scott was born and raised ; in Vernal and continues to live ; there, commuting to Todd ev- ery day. She enjoys seeing her former and current students in stores around town. She said it is fun for them to view her in a different atmosphere besides school, and often they are so excited ex-cited to see her that they jump up and down. For Scott, teaching is not just about book learning, but also about guiding students in other areas, like how to make friends and build character. "The best part about it is that I get to interact with chffdren and be a part of their lives in a positive way," she said. When Scott first went away to school at Utah State University in Logan, she thought she wanted want-ed to be a veterinarian. After a year, however, she came back to Vernal, not knowing what she wanted to do with her life. The Bible camp experience and Gagon's foresight that summer gave her direction, and she enrolled en-rolled in the education program at USU in Vernal. While going to school, Scott worked as a special ed aide at Davis Elementary, but had to quit to do her student teaching. teach-ing. She graduated in 2002, and got her teaching job at Todd the following year. She had wanted to teach fourth grade partly because be-cause she thought it would be fun to teach Utah history, but the opening was for a first grade teacher. Scott has no regrets and does not plan to move anywhere until she needs a change. For the past year and a half, Scott has been engaged to Marcus Mar-cus Dailey, who works for Murray Mur-ray Dry Wall in Vernal. The couple plan to marry in April or October. In her free time, Scott enjoys spending time with Dailey and her family. She also likes to cross stitch and make music. Although she is no longer lon-ger in a band, Scott continues to practice guitar, bass guitar, and piano. FEB 5 & 6 (Mon & Tue VERNAL Milt's Ace Hardware, 690 W.
