(o) Vernal Chamber of Commerce Business of the Month is presented by Julie for Uintah Basin Applied Technology College. UBATC served nearly 2,000 students last year in oil-related classes Uintah Basin Applied Technology College has been in the Uintah Basin since 1968 located at the Roosevelt Main Campus since 1975 and the current cur-rent Extension Campus since 1996. The college has 60 salaried and 31 part-time employees. Paul E. Hacking has been the campus president for three years. The creation of the Uintah Basin Area Vocation Center was authorized in 1967 and began operation in September 1968. In 1972 the legislature combined the three existing State Area Vocation Centers directly under the State Board of Vocational Education. A local governing board was appointed consisting of members mem-bers from Duchesne, Uintah and Daggett County School boards. The creation of the Utah College of Applied Technology was effective Sept. 1, 2001. This college is now governed by the Board of Regents and consist of nine regional campuses that collectively have the highest student enrollments of any college col-lege or university within the state of Utah. This new college status will allow students an additional educational option of earning a ; . competency-based competency-based Applied Associate of Technology degree in selected technical specialties. The Vernal Campus started in the late 70s in the basement of the old Maeser Elementary School with mainly business classes being taught. It moved from there to downtown, where the building and contents burned. Outgrowing the space at the courthouse, the campus moved to the USU building in 1990. In 1996, at the request of Uintah School District to improve access for students at Uintah High School to the programs, pro-grams, the campus was moved to its present site near Uintah High School. This past year the Legislature approved the long-awaited long-awaited funds to build a new building in Vernal. The ground break will be this spring and should be ready for occupancy by July of 2008. Another major change was the formal action of the Commission of the Council on Occupational Education to accredit the college on Feb. 13, 2006. This has given the college col-lege the opportunity to make improvements to the current - programs offered and will also guarantee the quality of new programs offered in the future. One of the college's new emphasis this past year has been to develop programs and classes to train individuals individu-als employed in the oil and gas industry. Last year the college col-lege served 1,970 students in the petroleum, energy safety services and transportation department. The business philosophy is "the Uintah Basin Applied Technology College will provide pro-vide competency based, open-entry, open-entry, open-exit, technical skill training to the secondary and adult population of the Uintah Basin Education Region." UBATC offers a wide selection selec-tion of classes whether it is just one class or a full course. In the custom fit program, training train-ing is designed to fit a specific business need. The college has scholarship monies available to assist qualified students.
