The Lady Utes Tennis season is in full swing. The girls have had two matches against two of the best teams in the State 3A and the top two in Region 10. Park City was up first and the Utes were swept 5-0. "This was a tough team to face in our first match and nerves were definitely a factor," fac-tor," stated Coach JoJo Gale. "We will get to face Park City again and expect much better results." Next up was another tough team, Judge Memorial. Again the Utes were swept 5-0, but the JV doubles team of Jessica and Sophie Wallis were winners. The varsity team traveled to St. George last weekend to compete in the St. George Challenge Cup. They played 5 matches in two days. First up was Tooele, with 2nd singles Shaylee Roth winning in a tie-break tie-break and 3rd singles Adrianne Francisco winning. Next up was Snow Canyon High School. The 1st doubles team of Stacia Dickson and Alesha Watkins came away with a win. The 3rd match was against a very good team from Orem. The Utes didn't win a match, but played well and made the girls from Orem really work for their win, especially espe-cially 1st singles player Tisha Raymond. The next day after a 4-12 hour rain delay, the Utes faced Roy High. "I felt the girls played sluggish by having hav-ing to wait so long to play, we could have beaten this team 5-0," Gale said. "However, winners win-ners from that match were 3rd singles Adrianne Francisco and 1st doubles, Dickson and Watkins." The last match of the day was against Parowan High. Winners included 2nd singles sin-gles Shaylee Roth, 3rd singles sin-gles Adrianne Francisco, 1st doubles Stacia Dickson and Alesha Watkins, and 2nd doubles dou-bles Brittany Hall and Megan Baker. This week the Utes play both Wasatch and Morgan. Marcus Cross named USU's Player of the Week Football player Marcus Cross was named the Utah State University Athlete of the Week for the period ending Sept. 10, it was announced on Monday. The weekly award is selected by a state media panel. Marcus Cross became just the third Utah State player to rush for 100 yards in the last 27 games, but it wasn't enough as the Aggies fell 20-0 4 at; Southeastern Conferencepjp-' , nent Arkansas lasF Saturday night. Cross, a junior in his second game at USU, carried 29 times for 103 yards as the Aggies rushed for 135 yards on the night. ; USU also added 114 passing yards, but Arkansas produced 457 yards of total offense in getting the win. The Aggies kept Arkansas out of the end zone in the first quarter and in fact kept the Razorbacks off the board until 8:01 remained in the second quarter. The Razorbacks capped a 50-yard drive with the first of two Darren McFadden touchdown runs. Jftter a late second quarter touchdown, Arkansas' only other score was a 72-yard run in the middle of the third quarter quar-ter as McFadden burst through the line for the longest run allowed by the Aggies since 2002. USU threatened late in the game getting the ball inside the Arkansas 10-yard line on its final possession, but three strait incomplete passes finished USU's chances of not being shutout. In the first two games this season, nine different Aggies have made their first career starts including three freshmen. fresh-men. In the season opener against Wyoming, first-time starters included TB Marcus Cross, OT Shawn Murphy, and freshman OT Taylor Wallace on offense and freshman DE Darby Golden, LB Daryl Fields, CB Drew Pearson and SS Caleb Taylor on the other of the ball. Last week at Arkansas DE Ben Calderwood and Freshman WR Xavier Bowman made their first USU starts.
