Show .Vernal Express Wednesday, September 13, 2006 - A3 MISSING FLUID DENSITY GAUGE, RECOVERY OF DEVICE IS SOUGHT A local company has notified the Nuclear Regulatory Commision (NRC) that a portable fluid-density gauge containing a sealed source o low level radioactive material has been discovered missing in Vernal, Ut. Superior Well Services based in Vernal, UT reported to the NRC on August 20, 2006 that one of its employees acknowledged a Thermo Electron 51 92 density gauge was missing from the truck that was carrying it. Volunteer fireman retires Floyd Workman has been a volunteer fire fighter for 52 years. He decided to become a fireman because he wanted to help the community. Colleagues said he was always willing to work overtime. He could even be found at the station working on the trucks at 2 or 3 a.m. In his years as a firefighter, Floyd was able to respond to 75-80 percent of the fires that occurred. This is a considerable consider-able amount when one remembers remem-bers that he also owns a ranch and worked in the Uintah Floyd Workman shakes hands with Mayor Allan Mashburn at City Council meeting when presented with a plaque for his years of service. Street-wise process underway to make the repairs last longer Many residents have expressed concern because roads that are repaired and repaved are torn up for utility or sewer connections within a year's time. There is a reason for this happening on streets that originated many years ago: the lines were laid under the middle of the roads, and it isn't possible to make a connection con-nection without digging up the street. When the lines are to one side of the road, the connection con-nection can be made without disturbing the street surface, even if they have to bore under the road to the other side. Also, having the lines in the middle of the street, the sewer covers must be in the middle as well, making a rough spot. Although, because of costs, the former system cannot be changed, plans can be made for new streets and roads. Commissioner Mike McKee stated, "Uintah County and the Special Service District have been working to upgrade roads throughout the county. "One of the challenges we are facing are the number of road cuts or right-of-way encroachments encroach-ments on our roads. To reinc' struct or build a road to American Association of State Two contacts forAARP There are two new contacts in the Uintah Basin for the nationally recognized advocacy organization of the American Association for Retired People (AARP). The two new Area Coordinators for AARP in Duchesne, Daggett and Uintah County are Jean Klein (789-5678) (789-5678) and Glenda Brown (545-2519). (545-2519). Please feel free to call either Jean or Glenda if you have questions about AARP and watch for great activities to be sponsored by this organization in our area. The benefits of belonging to AARP are many; they are not an insurance company and they do not spend all their energy on political issues. They do advocate for senior citizens on a number of diverse concerns such as health issues, transportation, transpor-tation, medical supplemental and automobile insurance, and much, much more. One of their programs is the Driver Safety Program, which is to be offered at the Crossroad Senior Citizens' Center in Roosevelt. Kathleen Fladeland is a volunteer trainer for AARP who will present the eight-hour course on Sept. 27. Please call her at 781-3001 or 790-7694 if you have questions or would like to sign up for the class. The cost of the program is $10. Some of the comments from previous graduates of this course are, "I learned a much better way to measure distances between cars traveling on the highway." "A very good refresher refresh-er course about the law." "It was great to learn methods to compensate for my hearing and sight loss over the years." There is another benefit of taking this class as every insurance insur-ance company in Utah is urged by the State of Utah to reduce car insurance for Drivers Safety graduates by a small percentage .depending on your insurance company. of Highway Transportation Officials (AASHTO) standards, stan-dards, as required by code, it costs approximately one million mil-lion dollars per mile. Because of this tremendous investment invest-ment we must ensure proper planning is done. The County is encouraging utility companies com-panies to upgrade their service ser-vice lines prior to the reconstruction recon-struction of these roads to minimize the potential of road cuts in the future. Even with the best of planning, road cuts may need to occur and it is imperative to make sure they are done properly. "Uintah County is in the process of hiring a road the existing rules and regulations regu-lations are being followed, which includes making sure the roads are being properly compacted. Without proper compaction a road can be left weak, and portions sink, eventually even-tually requiring major repair. "The County will also be working to pass new resolutions resolu-tions and ordinances to try to improve and maintain road conditions. With all of the new growth this county is experiencing, experi-encing, it is very important to plan for the future. We are moving forward in some strong, positive directions." Dr. Wright is taking applications for a position in a growing high energy, team oriented orthodontics practice. The gauge is made of painted P; gray steel with painted red steel i ;Jc3v pipe-ends and has a "Radioactive rAvr- ir stamped stainless steel tag on -.. Qy the bottom. The dimensions of the r gauge assembly with the pipe ends are 36"x19"x8". The weight of the gauge and its accessories is ap- t $r ' r--proximately 150 pounds. 1 2 inlV I We are asking that anyone in the area who has information about the missing gauge to call the NRC Operations Center, the Vernal Police Department or the Uintah County Sheriff's Office immediately. As long as the device is not tampered with or damaged, the gauge would not present a hazard to the public. The device contains approximately 200 millicuries of CS-137. The gauge makes its measurements by projecting a focused beam emitted by the source to a detector and then displays the count rate on a remote re-mote computer through an electronic port on the top of the gauge. Any attempt to tamper with the radioactive sources in the device could subject the person to radiation exposure. 1? ANYONE SEEING THE GAUGE SHOULD LEAVE IT ALONE AND REPORT ITS LOCATION TO THE NRC'S OPERATIONS OPERA-TIONS CENTER AT (301)816-5100.
