Show .Vernal Express, Wednesday, August 30, 2006 7 Uintah County has first West Nile Virus case of the year Last week TriCounty Health officials confirmed the first human case of West Nile Virus in Uintah County for 2006. "A Uintah County man in the age group of 45-64 has been confirmed as having West Nile Virus," said Joseph B. Shaffer, directhealth officer. "While most individuals do not have symptoms, about twenty percent per-cent of cases show severe flu-like flu-like symptoms. Fever, nausea, and even a rash are common." "Less common are the severe neurological symptoms such as this case which affect about one in every 150 people infected." Officials continue to stress the importance of personal protection. "Cover up with clothing in the evenings and wear your DEET insect repellent repel-lent when you go out from dusk-to dawn," advises Shaffer. "Mosquito proof your yard by getting rid of or treating standing stand-ing water. Also repair screens on doors and windows to keep mosquitoes out of our homes." Typically, mosquito populations popula-tions start dropping towards the end of August as the weather weath-er cools, but will continue to be around until the first good frost. West Nile virus has been detected in 13 of Utah's 29 counties, coun-ties, with 23 confirmed human cases. Last year, Uintah County had 15 human cases and one death due to WNV. TriCounty Health Department has been working with other local health departments, staff from the Utah Department of Health and the Department of Agriculture and Food, along with local mosquito abatement districts, and the Division of Wildlife Resources are all collaborating col-laborating to track and monitor moni-tor WNV in Utah. Since March 2005, local mosquito abatement districts have been using all their resources to reduce the number of mosquitoes that can spread the disease. They will continue these efforts throughout through-out the 2006 mosquito season. For more information on WNV in Utah, visit www.health.utah. govwnv. "Our mosquito abatement districts continue to do an excellent job of controlling mosquitoes this year; however, residents still need to take the recommended precautions for themselves," Shaffer said. Preventing mosquito bites is the best way to avoid getting WNV. Utahns can protect themselves them-selves from mosquito bites by: Using mosquito repellents that contain DEET or Picaridin (especially from dusk to dawn). Wearing long-sleeve shirts and long pants while outdoors. Getting rid of standing water; this is where mosquitoes may live. Most people who are infected with WNV do not show any symptoms. Company loses gauge radioactive Superior Well Service of Vernal is offering a $10,000 reward for the return of a 150-pound 150-pound density gauge that was lost from a truck that was carrying car-rying it last week. The gauge contained a sealed source of low level radioactive radioac-tive material. The material is enclosed in a lead casing and poses no threat to people or the environment unless the seal has been breached, reported officials offi-cials with the Utah Radiological Commission. The gauge is made of painted paint-ed gray steel with painted red steel pipe-ends and has a "Radioactive II" stamped on a stainless steel tag on the bottom. bot-tom. The dimension of the gauge assembly with the pipe ends are 36"xl9"x8." Superior Well Services based in Vernal, UT reported to the NRC on August 20, 2006 that one of its employees acknowledged a Thermo Electron 5192 density gauge was missing from the truck that was carrying it. If the device is not tampered with or damaged, the gauge would not present a hazard to the public. pub-lic. The device contains approximately approxi-mately 200 millicuries of CS-137. The gauge makes its measurements by projecting a focused beam emitted by the source to a detector and then displays the count rate on a remote computer through an electronic port on the top of the gauge. Any attempt to tamper with the radioactive sources in the device could subject the person to radiation exposure. A reward of Ten-Thousand Dollars ($10,000) has been offered by Superior Well Services for information resulting in the recovery of the gauge. Anyone seeing the gauge should leave it alone and report its location to the NRC's Operations Center at (301) 816-5100, the Vernal Police Department at 435-789-4222 or the Uintah County Sheriffs Office at 435-789-4222 . They may have headache, paralysis, and stiff neck, and may suffer long-lasting or per manent disability. The risk of severe illness increases with age, but there is no age group that isn't at risk of illness. Area retailers have several forms of repellent containing DEET in stock. DEET is safe and the most effective repellent available. Shaffer encourages residents to make use of these products to keep themselves and their families safe. West Nile virus is rare, but if you have symptoms including high fever, severe headache and stiff neck, contact your health care provider immediately. Though anyone can be infected and become ill, serious illness is more common in people over age 50.
