Show (ShaciSy Mi yp ion Vermis)! yields Ms off imi .Vernal Express, Wednesday, July 20, 2005 AH : By Brenden Eden : Express Writer ; Cops and robbers took on ; a whole new look on this past ; Thursday as the Vernal City ; Youth Council collected items ; for the food pantry. The coun-; coun-; cil kids met by the Junior High ; at 4 p.m. to discover which of ; them would be the law, and which would run from it. In the end, three "police officers" were given squirt-guns and badges, and the rest were given bags to stash their loot in. The robbers' assignment was to collect as much food as possible, possi-ble, going from house to house asking for food donations, as well as personal hygiene items and animal food. The robbers covered 4 different areas of Vernal, almost 40 neighborhoods. neighbor-hoods. Robbers traveled in groups of two, collecting food and trying to outdo the other groups. However, even as the robbers were gathering food, the police unit was out to get the robbers. The police were all issued water-guns, which were used to gain food for the police. If an officer hit a robber, that robber rob-ber had to surrender all the cans he was carrying. The only way to evade the police was to stash all of the cans they had gathered in their getaway cars. Once their cans were in the cars, they were off limits. The police officers had a squad car, but they were often dropped off on street corners to sneak up on the unsuspecting burglars. "The police did a pretty good job of getting all the cans they could," said their driver. "It was just hard not to follow one or two of the groups." The rules of the event were fairly simple. Cars were a safezone, cops couldn't puppy guard, and most important, all the groups had to be back at the hideout to drop off their goods by the checkpoint times. Each neighborhood had a set time of 30 minutes, then a five minute min-ute break before it was back to work. When all the gathering was done, points were tallied and the final scores were counted. First, second and third place teams were announced, and prizes were awarded for all their efforts. In the end, 614 cans were collected, a total of 589 pounds of food. The food was delivered deliv-ered to the food pantry, where it was weighed. After that, all the kids went to celebrate at a dinner and water fight at the Gerbers' house. Golden Corral donated chicken for the dinner, din-ner, and the council provided the rest. When all the food was finished, the kids all cooled off in a huge watertight that everyone every-one enjoyed. Sheep Creek fire managed for wildland fire use The Sheep Creek Fire, which was discovered last Saturday, is being managed for Wildland Fire Use. It is located four to five miles east of the Spirit Lake Lodge. Wildland Fire Use manages naturally ignited, in this case lightning caused, wildland fires with limited holding actions, to accomplish specific resource management objectives. The management of these fires is consistent with the Federal Wildland fire management Policy of 1995. The resource objective for the fire is fuels reduction. "We have learned that the lack of periodic fire in many wildlands increases risks to society and the environment," said Ashley National Forest Supervisor Kevin Elliott. "By working together, people can maximize the benefits of wild-land wild-land fire and minimize the damages, including threats to public health." The fire is burning in bug killed lodgepole pine and is approximately 100 acres. There are currently no road closures from the fire. Depending on the future fire activity, it is possible that Daggett Lake trail (Trails 11, 22 and a portion por-tion of 17, Spirit Lake Road and Hickerson Park Road may possibly pos-sibly be closed. Trail number 15 has been closed. The Forest Serivce will be releasing continual updates on the size and status of the fir. The association was awarded $2.5 million from the Community Impact Board to improve television service to the counties. "The . cooperation has been good," said Stringham. "Technicians from the different counties will help each other out." Ultimately the project will bring microwave television signals sig-nals to Blue Mountain. "Those on the west side of Uintah County who can see Blue Mountain from their home, might try turning their antenna around toward Blue Mountain to see if the reception improves," said Commissioner Mike McKee. Stringham said from his home in Roosevelt the quality of the Blue Mountain signal is excellent. Vernal residents do not have to touch their antennas anten-nas to receive the improved signal.
