A newly designed piece of equipment equip-ment known as a brush saw will be mounted on a Bobcat Track Loader and will be used to remove encroaching pinyon-juniper trees on critical deer winter range. Many of these tree-covered areas were initially treated over 30 years ago by a method known as "chaining," "chain-ing," but environmental regulations requiring archeological clearances in recent years have made it difficult dif-ficult to use this method in many areas. An alternate method, hand-cutting hand-cutting trees with chain saws, has proven to be very labor intensive for the acreage that can be treated. The brush saw has been developed devel-oped by Bobcat Company and has shown great promise in expanding expand-ing the areas that can be cut. A singe operator is able to treat up to five acres an hour, depending on tree density and size. Mule Deer Foundation is currently working to raise funds to purchase the equipment equip-ment necessary to accomplish this work. The problem with pinyon-juniper tree habitat is that other vegetation, including critical browse species for wintering deer, is unable to compete com-pete with the trees. Big game forage, for-age, in pounds per acre, continually decreases as tree density increases. By removing trees from selected areas, forage can be increased dramatically, dra-matically, sometimes over tenfold. With the recent loss in Rabbit Gulch of thousands of acres of sagebrush, a critical plant in carrying carry-ing deer through the winter season, forage in this area has become even more limited. The Salt Lake Valley Chapter of the Mule Deer Foundation has adopted rehabilitation of the Rabbit Gulch deer winter range as a chapter chap-ter project. Chapter Chair Peter Milburn invites the public to come out Saturday and see what is being done to help mule deer. To reach the site, turn north off Highway 40 into the area about two and a half miles west of the rest area near Tabby Junction, marked by street sign 36730 West. Follow that road about four and a half miles to the Rabbit Gulch Wildlife Management Unit. Another few hundred yards will take you through a mature stand of pinyon-juniper to the old chaining area.
