Show Varnal Exprett Wednesday, Aprii 17, 2002 1 9 The Utah Wildlife Board met on April 9 to approve the number of buck and bull big game hunting permits that would be available for the 2002 hunting seasons. Applications to apply for the permits per-mits were due on January 31 and have been processed by a private contract company for the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources (DWR). Now that permit numbers have been approved by the board, the drawing will be held this month and the results will be available by April 30. A total of 1,339 limited-entry buck deer permits will be available this year. This is a IS percent reduction reduc-tion from the 1,582 permits that were offered in 2001. According to a DWR news release, the reductions are attributable to reduced fawn production and survival on S units. The San Juan. Elk Ridge, West Desert and Vernon units and, locally, local-ly, the Book Cliffs unit have all seen poorer fawn production and survival following three years of drought conditions. Based on classification classi-fication data for the Book Cliffs, there were only about 26 fawns for every 100 adults in the spring population popu-lation this year. While the buck ratio following the fall hunt was approximately 35 fawns per 100 does, the number of permits recommended recom-mended was reduced to allow for lower fawn recruitment The permit reduction will maintain the buck ratio and also allow hunters to harvest har-vest older age bucks in future years. In 2001, the average buck harvested in the Book Cliffs was 4 years old. The total number of limited entry bull elk permits offered increased 6 percent statewide. There will be 855 available this fall compared to 805 last year. The largest increase will occur on the Wasatch Mountains unit on the western edge of the Uintah Basin. Permit numbers increased from 98 to 132 on this unit. Bull bison and hunter's choice bison permits on the Henry Mountain unit decreased from 17 in 2001 to 41 According to Jim Karpowitz, DWR once in a life time big game species coordinator, the herd has increased to a level above the management plan objective. "Now that we have them there (at the herd objective), we'll focus on maintaining the number of bison we have," Karpowitz said. The result is an increase of goat hunting permits being offered fur these areas. The number of permits on the Beaver area was increased from I to 2 while on the Uinta Mountain herd, the number of permits increased from 5 in 2001 to 10 this year. A mountain goat survey conducted by local biologists on the Uinta Mountains this past fall indicated that the herd numbered over 2(X) animals. This was the first complete survey conducted for goats in the Uinta Mountains. The findings allowed biologists to recommend more hunting opportunity.
