Shaw, Miss Rodeo Utah 1997, topped a field of 34 other young women at the 43rd Miss Rodeo America Pageant. Shaw, dressed in all white with a sequined scarf, held her hand over her mouth in disbelief as she accepted ac-cepted a hug from the outgoing Miss Rodeo America, MiQuel Holyoak. Though initially shocked at receiving the title, Shaw said she felt confident going into the competition. compe-tition. "I've prepared for this all my life and suddenly this was it," she said. "I knew I had to do my best and let the cards fall where they may." The title means Shaw will spend 1998 traveling the continent as a representative of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association and the Miss Rodeo America program. Many of her duties will be carried out on horseback at professional rodeos from coast to coast, while others will include public appearances appear-ances and speaking engagements. During the first night of the Stampede Days Rodeo in Bakersfield, Calif, on May 1, however, how-ever, Shaw was injured. While removing re-moving calves from the arena during dur-ing the calf-roping event, the horse Shaw was riding spooked unexpectedly unexpect-edly and began bucking. Although she rode the horse through several bucks and lunges, she was eventually eventual-ly thrown from the horse. Shaw was taken to Mercy Hospital where she underwent surgery for injuries to her right ankle an-kle and lower leg. The injuries included in-cluded several fractures of the lower low-er leg and ankle. Shaw is expected to have some recovery re-covery time prior to resuming her duties as Miss Rodeo America. While a recovery period may slow Shaw down, it certainly will not stop her from resuming her role as the leading lady of professional rodeo. She will arrive in Vernal Wednesday, July 8, and will sign autographs at the Uintah Care Center after which she will be with the other queens. Do you need money for college?
