Show A Historic First: The U.S. Mint Strikes Platinum I (NAPS) The first legal tender platinum bullion coins in United States history are now available for consumer purchase. The new Platinum American Eagle is the first U.S. coin made from platinum, plat-inum, and becomes the highest-denomination highest-denomination U.S. coin currency with a $100 face value. Platinum, the "most precious" of the precious metals, offers investors both support against times of market instability, and high-performance achievement in times of strong economic growth. An additional benefit is found in the Taxpayer Relief Act of 1997, which allows bullion coins and bars to be included in Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs) beginning be-ginning in 1998. "With the introduction of the U.S. Platinum Eagle, Americans are now able to invest in America by purchasing platinum coins that signal a historic first for the nation," stated Jacques Luben, executive director of Platinum Guild International, representing platinum's principal producers and fabricators. "Not only does platinum represent a great investment invest-ment opportunity due to the met al's scarcity, strong supply and demand fundamentals and value, but the Platinum Eagle coins are also meaningful gifts to enrich commemorative occasions." Legal tender coins provide a liquid, convenient and reliable way to own platinum, often with a narrow spread between the "asked" and the "bid" prices. With the introduction of the Platinum American Eagle bullion coins, it is estimated that the platinum used in coin fabrication worldwide will double to about 200,000 ounces this year. "We are proud to be producing this highly anticipated premiere product," said Philip N. Diehl, Director of the U.S. Mint. Available in four weights and denominations (1 ounce, Vi ounce, V ounce, Vio ounce), the Platinum Eagles are based on the current market price of platinum, plus a slight premium. All four coins bear the same design: "Portrait of Liberty" on the obverse (front) and "Eagle Soaring Above America" on the reverse (back).
