Lady golfers elect new officers The Utah Wildlife Board approved ap-proved a Division of Wildlife Resources (DWR) fish stocking policy at a public meeting last Wednesday. According to the DWR, the fish stocking policy includes in-cludes guidelines for wild trout management, the stocking of fish in federal Wilderness Areas, and where hatchery raised fish should be stocked. "We've always had a standard fish stocking operating procedure, some of it is written down and some of it is not," said Tom Pettengill, DWR Sport Fisheries Coordinator. "By establishing this stocking policy, we've pulled all these guidelines together to-gether and have put them in written form where people can access and understand them." DWR officials report that the driving force behind much of the policy is the need to balance the Division's ability to meet the fish catching demands placed upon it by a growing community of anglers. . "We have a limited number of fish we can stock and we want to use that resource as wisely as we can, to best meet the needs of a growing angling public," Pettengill said. Pettengill highlighted several guidelines and said they will be used in: identifying waters that will sus tain naturally reproducing wild troul populations and focusing stocking efforts on waters that can't. providing young anglers with a good angling experience by emphasizing empha-sizing the stocking of catchable trout in waters where 25 percent or more of the anglers using the w ater are under 14 years of age. not stocking Wilderness Area wild trout fisheries that can be sustained sus-tained by natural reproduction. Pettengill added that rainbow trout will no longer be stocked into Wilderness Area waters. "We want to manage Wilderness Areas with native cutthroats as much as possible," Pettengill said.
