Show 20 Vernal Express Wednesday, October 30, 1996 Football continued from page 18 kicker's head for a safety-and the rout was on, opening up the Uintah scoring floodgates. On successive Miner possessions, Uintah scored after sacking the Miner quarterback. First it was defensive de-fensive end Jon Workman recovering recover-ing a fumble on the Miner 10 after a host of Utes gang tackled the quarterback. quar-terback. Espindola scored his second sec-ond touchdown on a six yard run. After another defensive stand, quarterback Greg Gardiner hit Tucker Caldwell on a beautiful 40 yard bomb, setting up Espindola's third rushing touchdown another six yard plunge for a 22-0 lead. Then Jimmy Lewis laid a hit on the quarterback causing another fumble. This loose ball was picked up by tackle Steve Collins who sprinted his way down field for a 28 yard score and 28-0 lead. Finally, Uintah closed out the first half scoring when the squad capped another 60 yard drive with a Gardiner-to-Andy Long 20 yard strike for a 34-0 advantage. The second half was like a who's who of Uintah players. After Gardiner directed the team down field on their first possession of the second half, hitting Espindola on an 18 yard pass for Nick's fourth touchdown and 40-0 lead, Coach Belcher began substituting heavily. Uintah's next score came on a five yard Jed Robinson run for a 47-0 lead after Andy Ozaeta's kick was good. The score was set up by a 49 yard '-counter' run by Wes Madsen. Barker's final Ute score was set up by a 40 yard interception return by Ozaeta. In all, 1 1 different Uintah running backs collected yardage as the team racked up 110 rushing yards in the first half and 211 in the second for 321 total rushing yards. Four different differ-ent receivers caught passes from three different Uintah quarterbacks (Gardiner, Jon Muir and Adam Madsen) for a total of 136 passing yards with no interceptions. Uintah's defense was just as impressive. im-pressive. The defense caused seven Park City fumbles, recovering five. The squad limited the Miners to 94 total first half yards and 161 for the entire game, with most of the second sec-ond half being played by non-starters. non-starters. The Miners could muster just seven yards through the air in the first half and a minus two yards in the second for 12 total passing yards with one interception. In commenting on the team's final 4-4 mark, Coach Belcher was his usual up-beat self. "We had hoped for a little better results in the win-loss win-loss category, but we still look at the season as a success. The kids battled hard against some very good teams and with a break here or there, could easily have been 7-1 or 6-2 and heading into the playoffs. This team is filled with great young men. It was a pleasure to coach them this year." Coach Belcher also mentioned the future of the program by saying he felt the next four years would be a windfall for the high school team due to the great coaching taking place in the junior leagues and the fantastic support the program has received from the community. The team will officially end the season with a banquet next Thursday at the Western Park. Region 1 0 High School standings Final Standings "i '- ' JUJ P3 . '- l.k" i s VM. aril zMV 3H?
