Show 4 Vernal Express Wednesday, October 30, 1996 Vernal author writes book for teens Theda S. Washburn, Vernal author, au-thor, is receiving excellent reviews from her book "Guardian Angel," recently published by Hawkes Publishing, Inc. "I can say without hesitation that this is a great book for our youth," said Tony Spencer, president of Hawkes Publishing. "It is seldom that such an inspiring and motivating motivat-ing book is written for teenagers and young adults. It is a book so powerful that it can change bad behavior be-havior and turn lives around. We are very proud to publish it. This is an exciting and thrilling book. I must agree with the psychologist who reviewed "Guardian Angel" and said, 'This is a book that every young person must read to understand under-stand hisher true potential. A book that every parent should read to better understand the temptation and problems our youth face in today's to-day's complex and dangerous world."' "Guardian Angel" tells the story of identical twins, one who dies shortly after birth. Because of a pact the twins made in die preexis-tence preexis-tence that they'd stay together and help each other overcome the temptations temp-tations and problem they knew they'd encounter in the earth life, Alwan, the twin who died, is allowed al-lowed to return to earth as a spirit, to be a friend and guide to his twin, Whitney. Alwan is very real to Whitney. He can see and hear Alwan, but no one else can. This causes many strange and hilarious situations. Through their conversations, conversa-tions, Alwan is able to teach values on every problem that our youth face today without causing rebellion rebel-lion because he is such a warm, lovable and very human character and gives advice with such wit had humor that young people love him. Whitney is a great role model for young people as he overcomes the problems and temptations that all youth face today. "I enjoy writing for young people for they are the 'at risk' group in our society," said the author. "They are young, malleable and easily influenced. in-fluenced. Sadly enough, the predominant pre-dominant influence in our society is of a detrimental kind. I only hope that this book will encourage our youth to cherish their values in spite of peer pressure and be motivated moti-vated to reach for high personal goals." Mrs. Washburn has attended BYU and is a 1970 graduate of Utah State University. She has been a teacher and a writer for the Dcscrct News for over 10 years and has won many state-wide short story sto-ry contests. She is the author of an- Vernal housing needs forum set for Nov. 7 The public is invited to participate partici-pate in a housing needs forum organized orga-nized by two Utah nonprofit groups involved in developing and managing manag-ing affordable housing.
